Richmond church prays for George Zimmerman

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- "Pray for George Zimmerman" is the message one local church is sending out. More than 100 people gathered at Fourth Baptist Church in Richmond to pray for Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin and for peace.

Skittles and ice tea lined the pulpit as a reminder of what Trayvon Martin was carrying the night he was killed. It also reminded the?congregation of?the deep wound Zimmerman's acquittal caused.

"I began to see there was a lot of anger, resentment, and pain that people were experiencing," said Reverend Emory?Berry. "I began to think of?how?I could?unify everyone and move past that place of pain."

The prayer vigil was an answer to that. In the service, Rev. Berry said that Martin's family is praying to the same God that Zimmerman's family is. He said, one life was lost and the other is forever changed. Slowly,?the crowd changed their perspective.

"He needs to be prayed for," said one church goer. "Zimmerman's family also?needs to be prayed for."

During the service, Rev. Berry also called?the congregation's young men to the front of the church.?He encouraged them to be productive and make a difference. Even though, he says, many black men?feel the cards are stacked against them.

"The way that they do that is still being productive citizens," he said.?"Working together and having a positive outlook on life."

That message washed over the congregation. For at least one night, there was hope, forgiveness and a chance to do better for each other and ourselves.

In addition to the vigil, there will be a separate "all to action forum" but it has not yet been scheduled.
