GOLF: Local MassAm golfers advance

After two days of stroke play, seven area golfers from a field of 142 advanced Tuesday to this morning?s Round of 32 match-play portion of the 105th Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Longmeadow Country Club.

They are Matt Parziale of Thorny Lea GC, who is fresh off his Brockton City Four-Ball triumph with playing partner Steve Tasho on Sunday, at 1-over 141 (72-69); Steve Burak of Thorny Lea at 1-over 141 (70-71); Joe Harney of Granite Links GC at 2-over 142 (68-74); Herbie Aikens of Pinehills GC at 3-over 143 (71-72); Kevin Gately of the Harmon Club at 4-over 144 (71-73); defending champion Mike Calef of Brockton CC at 4-over 144 (70-74); and Doug Clapp of Old Sandwich GC at 6-over 146 (76-70).

Winners in the morning Round of 32 will advance to the afternoon Round of 16, which will determine Thursday morning?s quarterfinal matchups. Friday?s championship final is a 36-hole match.

Connor rules in Rockland

In the Rockland Women?s Golf Association?s Red, White and Blue Tournament on Saturday, MaryEllen Connor had a first net score of 50 and Janice Austin had a first gross score of 76 to win in the AB/Division. In the C/D division, first net was Kathy Miller (47) and first gross was Susan Marple (84).

In Sunday?s 18 Hole-Aggregate (partners) Tournament, first net went to Beth Nightingale and Ann Brett (117) while first gross went to Austin and Louise Pettengill (159).

Gately triumphs at Hatherly

?Carol Gately shot a 68 on Tuesday to win the Hatherly Ladies Golf Grandmother?s Tournament.

Marla Minier shot a 69 for second place while Julie Mehegan and Cathy Higgins each shot a 75 for third place.
