Education - Applied Social Psychology (ASP)

One of the key aspects of education and its environment, is student interactions with other students. Interactions between students can range from friendships, to developing positive self-concepts about themselves. In the educational environment such as a classroom a student learns " how to be not only?a student, but also a member or leader of a group,? and is exposed to the norms, language, and values of the community." (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012)

These interactions not only teach a child these important aspects of development but it also prepares them for a life outside of school, as well as learning to achieve academic success. Problems in behavioral, social and/or emotional fields can greatly hinder a child's academic success. "In fact children who have poor peer relationships, where they are either actively rejected or ignored by their peers, fail to develop competency in many areas of their lives, including academic achievement." (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012)

?

These problems only increase as they get older. In has been shown that academic success is related to having success with interacting with their peers. In fact "adolescents who continually experience rejection by their peers are at greater risk for dropping out of school, even though many are at least average in intelligence and have the ability to graduate." (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012)

One of the ways to counteract these problems is to encourage students to " help one another learn" is effective in boosting academic achievement in personal and social developments. (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012)
