FBI deactivates about 3,000 GPS tracking devices, loses sight of your car

FBI deactivates GPS trackersFollowing a January ruling by the US Supreme Court, the FBI has deactivated some 3,000 GPS units that were potentially infringing on the Fourth Amendment. The decision seems to be making waves in the U.S. Justice Department. Andrew Weissmann, FBI General Counsel, says some of the devices have been difficult to retrieve, as the vehicles they were once tracking now move undetected. The FBI has sought temporary permission to reactivate some of the devices to locate and retrieve the hardware. Weissmann says the FBI is also developing new guidelines regarding the legality of its agent's actions -- from the application and use of tracking devices, to the extent a suspect's garbage can be searched before the agent is committing trespass. In short, the FBI is working really hard not to violate your legal right to privacy. If you happen to find something weird under you car, give 'em a call. They'd probably like it back.

Tips about Drying out Orange Slices For Crafts

Using orange sections for craft reasons is really a centuries-old tradition. Their wonderful scent and natural appearance add warmth to the craft. You may make your personal dried orange slices in your own home by using these directions after which use within the next craft project.
&nbsp
A dehydrator can function very well with this. The easiest approach to dry up an orange, or any fruit is always to make use of a dehydrator. They are used like a tool to help keep food edible by completely drying out it. You are able to dry up the orange slice and employ it on the crafting project. Make use of a dehydrator on orange &frac14? long to dry them faster and also to help preserve the gorgeous orange color. It?ll dry when you stick to the dehydrator directions. The entire drying out technique of the slices must require in the plethora of six to ten hrs time. (Make certain your dehydrator is placed to ?fruit? for the best results.)
&nbsp
Take advantage from the oven. You may also make use of your oven to dry the orange. It is the nearby alternative for any dehydrator without having one. Reduce your oranges into quarter inch slices to be able to obtain moisture from their store. Make certain you do not squish the orange.&nbspJust make use of a paper towel to blot up any orange juice. If you wish to do this, sprinkle a tiny bit of cinnamon onto each orange just before drying out it, this can give a nice quantity of additional aroma. Also be sure to put them in fresh lemon juice to include color.
&nbsp
Once you have finished planning your orange slices, use them the middle rack of the oven. The orange may have a burnt side should you use a baking sheet. Once the orange slices happen to be arranged within the oven, bring the oven as much as 275 levels, for an hour or so. Lessen the warmth to 225 levels for the next 2 hours. Routinely check up on the orange slices to make certain they?re okay. They?ll dry faster using the following method. You are able to remove extra moisture making the drying out process faster by from time to time opening the oven. Obtain the dried orange slices out of your oven after 3 hrs. When they may appear just a little moist within the center, they?ll continue drying out because they awesome lower.
&nbsp
Capture solar energy. If you reside inside a warm climate, consider yourself lucky!&nbspYou can dry orange slices outdoors rather than within the oven. You simply need a classic screen from the window. Slice the oranges into quarter inch wedges and put them flat upon the screen. Make use of a paper towel to get rid of excess juice. Next, lift the screen above walk out to permit air free of charge air flow. You have to be to screen is situated inside a vibrant, sunny place. You switch the oranges about once every hour, however, you may get it done pretty much for the way sunny it?s. It will require 4 to 6 hrs to dry orange slices in by doing this.

Golf roundup: Ex-BYU star Daniel Summerhays leads Mayakoba Classic

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico ? Daniel Summerhays shot a 4-under 67 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over Chris Stroud in the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Summerhays had a 12-under 201 total on the windy, seaside El Camaleon course. The 28-year-old former BYU player won the Nationwide Tour?s 2007 Nationwide Children?s Hospital Invitational as an amateur for his biggest career victory.

"Tomorrow, I?m just going to try and do the same things I?ve been doing all week," Summerhays said. "I?m going to try and hit the driver really well again. My swing feels really good, so I?m picking out good targets. I?m judging the wind correctly and I?m managing it well. ... I?m really looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow to take the lead into the final round of a PGA Tour event and see how I perform. "

Stroud had a 68. He and Summerhays are the only players with three rounds in the 60s on the Greg Norman-designed course.

"The wind is everything on this course," Stroud said. "The wind has a huge effect on every shot, into the greens, off the tees. You have a lot of elevated tee boxes into the wind and you better hit it really straight off the tee or you?re going to be in the mangrove out there and trying to find your ball."

Defending champion Johnson Wagner is 1 over after a 71.

Match Play Championship

In Marana, Ariz., a dull day in the desert ended with high anticipation Saturday when Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood won their matches, setting up a semifinal showdown in the Match Play Championship.

At stake for the winner ? a chance to go to No. 1 in the world.

McIlroy had another surge on the back nine to put away Bae Sang-moon of South Korean, 3 and 2. Moments later, Westwood finished off Martin Laird of Scotland for a 3-and-2 victory to advance to the semifinals. Either of them can replace Luke Donald at No. 1 by winning this World Golf Championship.

LPGA Tour

In Singapore, Americans Katie Futcher and Angela Stanford and South Korea?s Jenny Shin all shot 1-under 71s on Saturday to stay tied for the lead after three rounds of the $1.4 million HSBC Women?s Champions.

All About Board Games: Board Games Never Go Out Of Style ...

Nowadays you can plop yourself down in front of your personal computer and play anything from a war game to chess to Donkey Kong or Pac-Man or Frogger. With a little diligence and some Google research, you can find just about any game that has ever been made in a computer version.

So, you might well ask, why does any company even bother to make an old fashioned, clear the table, open the box, shuffle the cards and spread out the pieces board game any more?

Well, the answer, quite honestly, comes in several parts. For one, there is absolutely nothing like the actual personal instant encounters you have in a face to face game. Let's face it, yes; it is fun to whoop someone's butt in a game, even online over the Internet. But it is NOWHERE near as satisfying as watching the expression on their face as you take that last piece off the board and win.

Everyone, especially Americans, enjoy competition. But we enjoy the winning more and a good half of the enjoyment in winning comes from your opponent's reaction to the event. The old thrill of victory and agony of defeat thing from the old TV show the Wide World of Sports.

Computers allow you to do things instantly and long distance with people that you normally could not but there is much more fun in a group of family or friends getting together and popping some cold beverages and having some snacks and turning OFF the television and actually enjoying each others company and the fun of being together and doing interactions.

Maybe it's the feel of physically moving your game pieces, or shuffling the cards and not depending on the computer to do it for you. Don't believe me? Get together with a friend or a few and dust off the old board game and give it a try. You might wonder how you ever got away from that feeling.

Granted, some things, like Television, music quality or the likes get better with age. I can't imagine having to sit through a whole day of black and white television shows on the old nineteen inch set when I have a fifty inch High definition plasma in the living room but it's kind of cool every once in a while to watch I Love Lucy re-runs on it. I also can't really envision playing my old albums when CDs are just so much better. But for some strange reason, I still have a turn table and every now and then, I crank it on and play some old forty five RPM records.

The old stuff is just COOL. Not to do on a daily basis, but it can really balance out your outlook on life, love and happiness.

There is a plethora of board games that are not only still popular but are enjoying resurgence in popularity today.

When was the last time you watched a chess tournament on the Internet? I bet you can't remember, but if you hit the television right now, I would wager that you would find, on one of the sports stations on satellite, a high stakes chess games being televised and it will have a LTO of people there watching it live and a bunch more at home.

Same with the game of Monopoly. There are still teams that play that game for fun and money all over the world. And it is off the old, grab the pieces and move them, physically roll the dice move and draw a card table game.

Computer games, in my opinion, still have a place; they work well to keep the kids quiet on a long trip. But the real thing belongs at home and it is high time that you dig them out of the closet, pull the kids off the computer and out from in front of the boob tube and enjoy time as a family.

A lot of families are doing that now and guess what? Those families are happier and the kids have less trouble at school and with the law and the parents are less likely to have marital issues because it promotes togetherness and the family as a functioning unit

So that, my friends are some of the reasons that Board Games have never, and will never - in the foreseeable future, go out of style as a form of entertainment.

Now, who turned off Monday night wrestling on me?

Nursing School Programs: Will and Estate Planning Documents all ...

By Michael Spevack, Esq.

A will, power of attorney, health care proxy, living will, HIPAA release and organ donor card are essential documents that should be prepared for all adults living in the United States. The author is an attorney in New York City and will prepare these documents for a very reasonable fee.

Average individuals earning between $30,000 to $250,000 per year need these documents otherwise they are ill prepared for unforeseen changes in health or even their own death. A will is necessary so that the wishes of the individual, not the rote operation of state law, control the distribution of assets and provide for care of any children.

The author believes it is far better for people to have any will, even one prepared by generic software which might not be truly tailored to the individual's needs, then to not have one.

In New York City, where the author practices law, it should cost around $600 for a basic set of documents for a married couple and less for an individual.

Many attorneys, such as the author, accept credit or debit cards and payment plans on such cards making an attorney drafted will and estate documents quite affordable.

Other than a will, what other estate planning documents do individuals and couples need as part of a basic estate plan?

A power of attorney is a very important and powerful legal tool which is effective while the person granting such power is alive. A spouse or other trusted person can conduct transactions and estate gifting while you are unable to. It is very important to have an attorney prepare this document as in New York State there is an official form which is quite complicated and there are important legal considerations at play.

A living will allows you to express your wishes regarding medical treatment in the event you at some point become unable to do this for yourself.

A health care proxy is a legal document which allows a person or persons of your choosing to make medical decisions for you when you are unable to do this for yourself.

An organ donor card and HIPAA release are two other documents which all adults should have prepared for them by an attorney.

Protect yourself by preparing the essential estate planning documents discussed above. It is best to do so using a competent attorney.

Encryption method by RUB is becoming international standard

An increasing number of everyday devices such as car keys, smart phones and even medical implants need protection from hackers. The encryption method PRESENT is the smallest cipher for such cost and energy constrained applications. It is the result of a collaboration between the Ruhr-Universitt Bochum (Germany), Orange Labs France and the Technical University of Denmark. The cipher design is characterized by its hardware efficiency which makes it even applicable in health insurance cards or RFID-labels (substitute for bar codes). Because the cipher combines low costs with a particularly high level of security it is becoming an international standard now.

From Logistics to Medical Technology

The adoption of the cipher by the "International Organization for Standardization (ISO)" is considered a major approval by the designers. "For several years there has been a growing demand by industry for building blocks, which aren't only offering excellent security, but are cost efficient. PRESENT is the first cipher which was developed especially for this purpose. It provides security at costs of less than one cent", says Prof. Christof Paar (Chair for Embedded Security). PRESENT has won the German IT-Security Award in 2010 and will be used in logistics, in vehicles and machines and in medical technologies within the next years. It is widely considered a successful example of IT security made in Germany.

Gingrich slams rivals for backing out of debate

Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich speaks during a campaign stop on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 in Peachtree City, Ga. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich slammed his Republican rivals Friday for refusing to appear in a nationally televised debate from his home state of Georgia, a state the former House speaker has made central to his strategy of getting his struggling presidential bid back on track.

Gingrich made his remarks at a rally in the congressional district he represented for 20 years, speaking to a few hundred supporters. He planned several campaign stops across Georgia on Saturday with Herman Cain, a fellow Georgian and former contender for the GOP nomination who has since endorsed Gingrich.

CNN was forced to cancel the debate, scheduled to take place in Atlanta on March 1, after Mitt Romney declined to participate. Rick Santorum quickly followed suit.

The cancellation was a blow to Gingrich, who is banking on a strong showing on Super Tuesday, March 6, in Georgia, Ohio and eight other states holding contests that day.

"The average Georgian is going to say, the average Ohioan is going to say, 'Let me get this straight. They won't come here to debate but they want my vote?'" Gingrich said, adding, "Anybody who's afraid of debating Newt Gingrich isn't going to be in very good shape to debate Barack Obama."

Gingrich, whose sole win came in South Carolina's primary Jan. 21, conceded winning Georgia was "crucial" to sustaining his presidential bid. His candidacy has struggled since Romney soundly beat him in Florida Jan. 31 and Santorum won contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Feb. 7.

Gingrich also criticized ads run by a super PAC supporting Romney's candidacy.

The ads by Restore Our Future, which is run by former Romney advisers, have been harshly critical of Gingrich and the millions the group spent on the ads contributed to his defeat in Florida and Iowa. Restore Our Future is currently running ads in Michigan and Arizona, which hold primaries Feb. 28, as well as several Super Tuesday states.

"You can't hide behind millions of dollars in negative ads and think you're going to win the presidency," Gingrich said. "I think there is a declining impact of totally false ads, and I think you're going to see as Romney applies the same technique at Santorum, a general revulsion against this kind of purely negative campaigning."

Gingrich's campaign website posted a letter Friday from attorney Patrick Milsaps to Georgia television stations warning of potential liability if they aired Restore Our Future ads claiming Gingrich had favored legislation endorsing China's one-child policy. The group has run ads in several states suggesting Gingrich partnered with Democrat Nancy Pelosi to support legislation favoring such a policy, which has been discredited by several independent political fact checking organizations.

SmugMug (Winter 2012)

If you're looking for a customizable gallery site for your digital photos, or want to try to sell images online, SmugMug is a very capable option. But SmugMug's interface looks outdated compared with Flickr's seamless one, and its community is dwarfed by Flickr's, which has abundant ways of exploring the work of and connecting with other photographers of every interest type. What's more, Flickr and most other competitors offer a free account option, while SmugMug has a minimum $40-per-year membership fee.

Signup and Setup
Though SmugMug offers no free account like Flickr, Picasa, PhotoBucket, and others do, there is a free 15-day trial, and thankfully, this doesn't require credit card info. You can sign up either by entering and email address or through Facebook Connect. Right when you first sign up, you get a personalized URL at the smugmug.com domain. Next, you name your gallery, choose a category for it (over 60 choices, from Airplanes to Zoos, with Births and Funerals in between.) Or you can create a category name of your own. The gallery gets its own URL, using a slash after your main one.

Your homepage in SmugMug by default shows your user picture and any biographical info you've supplied, followed by thumbnails for your galleries. You can add horizontal entries for slideshows, individual large photo views, communities, a keyword tag cloud, or most popular or recent photo. You can easily move any of these sections up and down on your homepage. It's more configurable that Flickr or Picasa's, but one basic behavior I prefer in those two competitors is that the basic site URL takes you to your own gallery dashboard page; in SmugMug, this takes you to SmugMug's advertisement page.

Uploading
SmugMug offers drag-and-drop uploading on its site if you're using an HTML5-compliant browser, where Flickr requires installing a desktop uploader app for that. Both also let you upload via an email address. If you use standard software like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Apple Aperture, though, none of this matters, since both services have included publish exporters. SmugMug does offer a good deal of third-party integration, but most apps, like the popular iPhone image editors are more likely to have built-in uploading to Facebook and Flickr than to SmugMug, and Flickr's flourishing App Garden makes SmugMug's look tiny.

Video
One area SmugMug beats Flickr is in video hosting: You can upload videos of up to 20 minutes, compared with Flickr's 90 seconds. Then again, if you're going to do that, why not use the free YouTube or Vimeo sites? Flickr's HD video quality is among the highest I've seen, so the shorter limit makes sense. Flickr's video capability is more for "long photographs" than for video. The SmugMug video player offers "Stretch" and "HD" options. SmugMug reported being done with the uploads very quickly, but when I tried to view the images online, a "Processing" icon displayed in place of the image thumbnail.

High definition video looked great in both services. Both also let me download the video, but in SmugMug it came back with a 3,279 Kbps bitrate, wheras Flickr sent a much higher-quality 24 Mbps bitrate file. Audio was similarly compressed, even though I'd chosen "Hidef" from the SmugMug download menu.

Organizing
After you upload images to a SmugMug gallery, you're simply taken to the gallery. Flickr, by contrast, offers the chance to add titles, captions, and tags right after uploading. You can add these from links at the bottom of an image view in SmugMug. An even bigger missing tagging component is SmugMug's lack of face tagging, for which both Picasa and Flickr offer strong implementations.

SmugMug does offer a Map This button, which does a nice job of showing where your image was taken on a Google Map if the location data was included?as is the case for most smart phones. But again, competitors offer deeper map integration, showing a map thumbnail alongside the photo on its page, and Flickr even shows a world map where you can browser your own or all members' photos. For the ultimate in photo mapping, though, check out Panoramio.

Galleries
SmugMug's galleries of your uploaded photos and videos show the thumbnails of all gallery content on the left, with a larger image taking up the right sides of the browser window. Under the photo are Tweet, Facebook Share, and Facebook Like buttons. When you hover the mouse cursor over the image a flyover panel slides from the right side, offering Thumbs Up and Down, other viewing sizes, EXIF information, and a folder icon for downloading.

You can change a gallery's appearance by choosing among SmugMug's 70-odd themes at any time. But this seems more of? MySpace style approach, while Flickr and Picasa offer a more Facebook-like approach?choose one consistent, well designed interface for everyone's photo galleries.

Clicking on a picture opens a larger version that takes up most of the window, but unlike Flickr's equivalent view, SmugMug still displays the distracting menu bar across the top, with size choices, purchase options, and social buttons. I did like how SmugMug's Slideshow button switches the browser to full screen mode automatically.

Spatial proximity plays important role in chromosome translocation

UMass Medical School study offers evidence that the 3D organization of chromosomes plays a part in cancer genomics

WORCESTER, Mass. -- It is well understood that chromosomal translocation a process whereby pieces of two chromosomes break off and exchange places is a hallmark of many cancers including leukemia, thyroid cancer and lymphoma and play an important part in how healthy cells become cancerous. The role spatial proximity plays in why certain chromosomal translocations happen repeatedly, however, has been a long-standing area of debate among scientists.

A new study published online in the journal Cell by lead authors Job Dekker, PhD, co-director of the Program in Systems Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and Frederick Alt, PhD, director of the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, offers the first conclusive evidence that the three dimensional structure of the chromosome strongly influences patterns of chromosome rearrangements and translocations. This finding sheds light on fundamental processes related to cancer and our understanding of cancer genomics.

"Understanding how chromosome translocations happen is important if we want to understand the evolution of cancer genomes," said Rachel Patton McCord, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at UMMS and co-first author of the study. "If certain individuals have changes in their chromosome structure it might indicate an increased risk for translocations that give rise to cancer. And, after precancerous changes have taken place in the genome of the cell, corresponding rearrangements in the 3D genome may dictate which translocations happen as cancer progresses."

In order to measure how all the sequences in the genome are organized relative to one another, McCord used a molecular technology developed in 2009 by Dekker called Hi-C to generate a three-dimensional model of a pro-B cell (white blood cell) from a mouse. At the same time, a high-throughput genome-wide translocation sequencing (HTGTS) technique developed by Dr. Alt's lab was used to map "hot spots" in the genome where chromosome breaks and translocations are more likely to occur. By combining the 3D model of the genome, the first for a mouse, with the sites of translocations in these cells, researchers were able to explore the role spatial proximity plays in the reassembly of these chromosome breaks.

What they observed is that for random, widespread, low-frequency DNA breaks, such as might occur after exposure to too much sun or chemotherapy, spatial proximity plays a dominant role in determining where in the genome these pieces of chromosome get reattached. Simply stated, the closer the breaks were to each other, the more likely they were to be incorrectly attached to a neighboring chromosome. Dekker and colleagues also observed that chromosome breaks were also more likely to be translocated along the whole chromosome where they resided, adding further evidence that spatial organization is a determining factor in chromosome translocations.

"We see the same chromosome rearrangements happening over and over again in certain cancers, but determining the role of spatial proximity in this process has been a hard question to answer," said Dekker, also professor of biochemistry & molecular pharmacology and molecular medicine at UMMS. "By generating a 3D model of the entire genome and mapping translocations from targeted chromosome breaks we can finally start to answer this question."

Apple launches new legal attack on Samsung phones

Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:51am EST

(Reuters) ? Apple Inc raised the stake in an intensifying global patent battle with Samsung Electronics by targeting the latest model using Google?s fast growing Android software, a move which may affect other Android phone makers.

Apple has asked a federal court in California to block Samsung from selling its new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, which use Google?s newest version of Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich, alleging four patent violations including new features such as a voice-command search function.

Galaxy Nexus, the official debut of which was delayed by Samsung in October to pay respect to Apple?s co-founder Steve Jobs, is the first phone running on the newest Android version before the platform is widely adopted by hardware manufacturers such as HTC Corp and Motorola Mobility. HTC and Motorola are also in separate patent disputes with Apple.

In a lawsuit filed last week in San Jose, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from Apple products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

?Google cannot deny its undivided responsibility for any infringement findings. A preliminary injunction would not prohibit the sale of a Galaxy nexus just because it?s called Galaxy Nexus or looks like one: it?s all about which patents it infringes on,? said independent patent expert Florian Meuller.

?I am absolutely certain that?for the preliminary injunction motion the Galaxy Nexus was singled out because it?s so new, and important.?

Samsung said in a statement on Monday that it is aware of the filing by Apple in the California court.

?We continue to assert our intellectual property rights and defend against Apple?s claims to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business,? Samsung said in a statement.

With the new lawsuit, Apple is opening up another legal assault on the South Korea-based company after taking Samsung to the same court in April of last year. In the earlier case, Apple alleged that Samsung illegally copied iPhone and iPad design features and the look of its screen icons. That case is still going on, although in December Apple lost a bid for a preliminary bar against Samsung for selling Galaxy phones and tablets.

Apple acknowledged the setback in the new action and said now it is suing over new products and different patents.

In addition to the California cases, Apple and Samsung are waging more than 20 legal fights in at least 10 countries in their war for global leadership of smartphone and tablet markets.

The new case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, et a 12-00630.

Mortgage settlement won't end probes: NY attorney general

Mortgage settlement improved because New York, California initially rejected it, some say. Even after mortgage settlement, New York Attorney General Schneiderman is still investigating related fraud.

New York Attorney General Eric?Schneiderman, a lead investigator into the mortgage collapse that wobbled the U.S. economy, hasn't taken the title "Sheriff of Wall Street" that one of his predecessors rode all the way to the governor's mansion.

But he's not backing down, either.

He rejected a settlement with major banks a year ago because it shielded them from future investigations. For his efforts, he got bounced off a committee of attorneys general negotiating the settlement; more than 40 of them wanted to take the deal.

But after digging in, the soft-spoken, 57-year-old lawyer from Manhattan won. The states still got billions in settlement money, and he was tapped by President Barack Obama to co-chair a group to keep investigating. This week, shortly after the announcement of the $25 billion nationwide settlement with five major mortgage banks concerning foreclosure abuses,?Schneiderman?noted that it preserved authority to investigate and prosecute related securities fraud, authority that he insisted on.

"I am the lawyer for the people of the state of New York,"?Schneiderman?demurred when asked about wearing the "Sheriff's" badge that once belonged to former Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.

Schneiderman, in his first year of office, kept Wall Street investigations going and started new ones. He insisted on preserving those, despite pressure from the banks, his fellow attorneys general, the Obama administration and homeowners needing the debt relief the settlement promised.

His ex-wife, attorney and political consultant Jennifer Cunningham, called it a "gutsy" stand in keeping withSchneiderman's?character. She says she knows him better than anyone as co-parent of their teenage daughter.

"If he believes it's the right thing to do, he doesn't back down," she said.

Cunningham, managing partner of SKDKnickerbocker consulting, also guided?Schneiderman's?2010 campaign victory over what some observers called one of the best candidate fields for attorney general.

Former Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, who lost to?Schneiderman?in that primary, said there is some value to what he did in the foreclosure settlement but the results remain to be seen.

"I think when California and New York said no, it put some spine in the whole process and they got a better deal," Brodsky said. "The real import here is the ability to continue to prosecute. That all will come clear over time, whether that amounts to anything."

R&B singer David Peaston dies at age 54 (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Singer David Peaston, who had a string of R&B hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has died, his family said Thursday.

Peaston, 54, died Wednesday of complications from diabetes, his niece, Neuka Mitchell said.

Peaston was born into a St. Louis family with deep musical roots. His mother, gospel singer Martha Bass, was one of the Clara Ward Singers. His older sister, Fontella Bass, is a noted singer whose single "Rescue Me" reached No. 1 on R&B charts and No. 4 on pop single charts in 1965.

Peaston's highest charting song was "Two Wrongs (Don't Make It Right)," which reached No. 3 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1989. "Can I?" got to No. 14 R&B that year, and "We're All in This Together" reached No. 11 R&B and No. 45 on the dance charts in 1990. His first album, "Introducing ... David Peaston," reached No. 7 on the Billboard R&B album chart in 1989. At the height of his career, he toured with Gladys Knight.

Peaston earned a degree in elementary education and taught in his hometown of St. Louis before moving to New York to pursue a career as a singer. He began doing session gospel and R&B work. His career got a big boost after winning several competitions on the "Showtime at the Apollo" television show in the late 1980s, winning over fans and the judges with his powerful rendition of "God Bless The Child."

Singer Cheryl Pepsii Riley recalled traveling with Peaston on several shows.

"I soooooooooo loved this man with the hearty laugh, great sense of humor, that incredible voice, and he was the most amazing friend!!!" she said in a statement to the website eurweb.com. "This hurts so much. He had a gift that commanded the room. David will be sorely missed."

Despite a rich tenor voice that awed fans, crossover success eluded Peaston.

"He's the greatest unsung artist ever," Mitchell said. "Fabulous. A great father, husband, uncle. A great man."

Peaston's Facebook page described him as a "joyful independent double amputee." Both of Preston's legs were amputated below the knees due to diabetes.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, his high school sweetheart Marilyn, and two sons. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Former Colts coach Caldwell hired by Ravens (AP)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? Jim Caldwell is back in the NFL, this time as the Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach.

The 57-year-old Caldwell was hired on Monday by the Ravens. The appointment comes less than two weeks after Caldwell was fired as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts following a 2-14 season.

Caldwell went 26-22 in three years with Indianapolis, including a Super Bowl appearance.

After working with Colts standout quarterback Peyton Manning for 10 seasons, Caldwell will turn his attention toward improving Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and teaming with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to strengthen Baltimore's passing game, which ranked 19th this season.

"After spending considerable time with Jim over the last week, we think he will be an excellent fit with our team, coaching the quarterbacks and helping with our offense," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "We believe he enhances our staff. Jim has a tremendous history coaching at the college and pro level, especially working with quarterbacks and providing help with offenses.

"The timing is right to add a quarterbacks coach after Cam and Joe worked so closely and well together this year. It's the right step for us now."

Before taking over as head coach at Indianapolis, Caldwell spent seven seasons as the team's quarterbacks coach. Under his direction, Manning won three NFL MVP awards. In 2004, Indianapolis went 12-4 behind Manning, who threw for a career-high 49 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.

"I am really excited to work with coach Harbaugh, Cam and the rest of the coaching staff," Caldwell said. "It's a great fit for me, and I'm happy they saw it that way. I can't wait to get started with the Ravens, an organization that from top to bottom is one of the NFL's best."

Baltimore is the only NFL team to reach the playoffs in each of the last four seasons. The Ravens were eliminated this year by New England in the AFC title game.
