(AP) ? Tom Brady and the Patriots certainly seemed right at home on their second trip to London.

Brady led touchdown drives on the Patriots' first five drives Sunday and New England (5-3) ran over the St. Louis Rams 45-7 in the NFL's annual regular-season game at Wembley Stadium.

The Rams (3-5) had looked ready to put up a fight when Sam Bradford hit Chris Givens with a 50-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the game.

But St. Louis, which arrived in London on Tuesday three days before the Patriots to get better adjusted to the time difference, was the team that looked jetlagged the rest of the way.

Brady led four straight touchdown drives to give New England a commanding 28-7 lead by halftime, and then hit Brandon Lloyd for a 9-yard score to start the third quarter.

Brady passed for 304 yards with four touchdowns and tight end Rob Gronkowski caught eight passes for 146 yards and two scores. Lloyd also had two touchdown catches, while Stevan Ridley ran for 127 yards and a score as the Patriots put themselves atop the AFC East heading into their off week.

The Rams, who also will be off, are now last in the NFC West after losing two in a row.

New England had at least 350 yards of total offense for the 17th straight game ? breaking an NFL record set by the Rams in 1999-2000, back when Kurt Warner was leading "The Greatest Show on Turf."

This, perhaps, was the greatest show put on by a team in London since the NFL started staging regular-season games here in 2007 ? or at least the most dominating, as New England gave the British crowd a first-hand look at the league's top-ranked offense.

After the Rams took the lead, Brady led a 78-yard drive to tie the scores with a 19-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd. On their next drive, coach Bill Belichick opted to go for it on fourth down at the one-yard line, and Shane Vereen broke into the end zone for the score.

It was the only fourth down the Rams forced until the middle of the third quarter, when the Patriots had to settle for a 26-yard field goal to make it 38-7.

In between, Brady hit Gronkowski on a 7-yard touchdown pass and Ridley had another one-yard run into the end zone for the Patriots 10 seconds before halftime.

St. Louis only had one other scoring opportunity in the first half, but botched the snap on a 52-yard field goal attempt right after the two-minute warning and holder Johnny Hekker was tackled for a 9-yard loss.

By then, though, it was clear that field goals wouldn't do much good either for the Rams, who again failed to cope with a high-powered offense after losing to Green Bay at home last weekend.

Already without leading receiver Danny Amendola, the Rams offense sputtered after Givens left the game temporarily with a toe injury late in the first quarter.

Givens' touchdown gave him a reception of at least 50 yards for the fifth straight game, a rookie record, but he only managed two more catches after returning and finished with 63 yards. Running back Steven Jackson was also largely shut down, finishing with 23 yards on seven carries. Bradford was 23 of 31 for 205 yards and added an interception in the fourth quarter before being replaced by backup Kellen Clemens near the end.

Brady, meanwhile, made full use of his multitude of weapons ? and got some help by the Rams defense along the way. St. Louis was called for pass interference on third down three times in the first half ? including twice on the final drive.

New England became the first team to win two games in London, having beaten Tampa Bay here in 2009. As expected, the Patriots also had the majority of crowd support from the 84,004 fans at Wembley, despite the Rams being the designated home team.

That, however, didn't stop backup quarterback Ryan Mallett from getting booed when taking knee to run out the clock ? one of the few aspects of the American version of football that the British crowd didn't seem to appreciate.

Grace, Truth, and Relationships ? Bob Lonac's Blog

CRISTA - Grace and TruthThis morning I read the opening chapter of the gospel of John which states that Jesus came to bring us grace and truth.? Those two words jumped out at me anew as I read, and I thought to myself, ?Easier said than done.? I find myself fairly often trying to balance these two supposedly opposite values of grace and truth in my relationships.? Even this morning I was chatting with someone and encouraging him to share some difficult things with a colleague, which is not going to be easy.

We tend to think we are going to either win or lose in these hard discussions.? I think that there is a third way.? It is not splitting hairs down the middle or requiring one person to win while the other loses. We are capable of holding on to both grace and truth at the same time.? It is about how we feel towards the person we are addressing, the tone of voice we use, and non-verbal communication that shows you love and care about them and the issue at hand. I know in my heart when someone can say hard things to me and it comes from a place of love and commitment to our relationship, I am built up. Build someone up today. Pray for grace and truth, and give it a try.

Hair Loss Drugs and Erectile Function | Health Medical Dictionary

All medications have potential side effects which may affect a low number of people who use the drug. The hair loss drug known as Propecia is no different. But there is a certain side effect that men may be unwilling to risk occurring. The drug can cause erectile function problems including loss of libido and ejaculation disorders.

Why Do Men Choose Hair Loss Drugs?

Losing your hair is never a fun thing. It can cause depression or social anxiety. Just like women, men want to look their best. Appearance is attributed to many life successes including a happy marriage and advancing up the corporate ladder. This drug helps stop hair loss in most men who take it. It inhibits the production of a particular sex hormone that is known to cause male-pattern baldness. Many men who take the drug have reported having their hair grow back. This does not happen for all users and it can take years for full hair restoration to occur.

The Hair Restoration Process: What will occur?

Do not be discouraged by increased hair loss during the first few months of treatment. In reality, this loss of hair is an intended outcome of using the drug. One way the medication works to prevent further thinning of the hair is by removing old hair. This eradication of the old hair opens up space for new healthier hair follicles to appear. Hair will be thicker than the original strands. It can take up to six months for the treatment to work as determined by counting hair strands. A year is required for noticeable results. This means you can visibly see that hair loss has stopped or hair has grown back.

When Erectile Function Issues Occur

Side effects associated with this drug range from mood swings to more serious sexual function disorders. A small percentage of users may experience impotency, testicular pain, or abnormal ejaculation. If you develop any type of erectile function disorder while using this drug, you should notify your physician. If you are experiencing erectile function disorder, do not assume that the disorder is related to Propecia. There are many reasons you may experience these conditions. Even anxiety and depression can occur while using this medication. However, they are also symptoms of other conditions.

Allow your doctor to perform some tests and review your medical history to determine the cause of your problems. There may be a medical reason you are experiencing higher than normal anxiety or erectile dysfunction. Once all medical causes are ruled out, only then should you consider stopping the use of Propecia. Your doctor will be able to recommend an appropriate course of action.

Islamic group: No-fly list strands US man in Europe

nbcnewyork.com

By NBC News staff

A New York City man who traveled to Europe to visit relatives this summer has been stranded there since Oct. 1, an advocacy group says, because his name allegedly appears on the no-fly list.

According to the New York Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Samir Suljovic, 26, flew to Montenegro this summer to visit family and friends, but when he tried to travel back to New York on Oct. 1, airline representatives in Vienna, Austria, told him the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection had asked them not to allow him to board his flight.

CAIR says Suljovic is now in Germany. The advocacy group said it had demanded answers from the authorities, but have not heard back from the local U.S. Embassy or from customs and homeland security officials. Suljovic, a U.S. citizen born and raised in Queens, has no criminal history, CAIR says.

?This is outrageous,? CAIR-NY Executive Director Muneer Awad told NBCNewYork.com. ?They basically ignored his calls for a reason why this is happening.?

According to the New York Daily News, the FBI maintains the no-fly list, and the TSA checks names against the list when allowing passengers on commercial flights.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

?This is not a unique case for American Muslims who have been traveling abroad,? Awad told the Daily News. ?He has no criminal record, he has never been charged with anything criminal. A Muslim happened to be traveling abroad and it raised a red flag for no other reason than that he is Muslim.?

In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, New York members of Congress and the U.S. Embassy in Munich, CAIR states: "The denial of Mr. Suljovic's right to return home without due process of law constitutes a grave violation of his civil rights and liberties. Instead of protecting this young U.S. citizen while he traveled abroad, the government has effectively stranded him in an unfamiliar country without shelter or protection."

California student takes the long way home to US after ?no-fly? designation

An FBI spokesman told the Daily News the no-fly list contains about 20,000 names, and about 500 of those are American citizens.

?99.7 percent of the people who file complaints about the no-fly list, it turns out it has nothing to do with the no-fly list at all,? the spokesman told the Daily News.

In 2010, a New York man with the same name as Suljovic sued the Gramercy Park Hotel because management wouldn't hire him unless he shaved his beard, the New York Post reported.

A-Rod benched again, with Granderson this time

DETROIT (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez was dropped from the Yankees' starting lineup again Wednesday, this time with New York facing elimination and his future with the team still to be resolved.

Trailing 3-0 in the AL championship series against Detroit, the Yankees also benched slumping center fielder Curtis Granderson.

Rodriguez, only 3 for 23 in this postseason, was out of the lineup for the third time in New York's nine playoff games. The star third baseman also has been pulled for a pinch hitter three times.

"We will go forward. Alex will go forward," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

"That doesn't mean that he's done, that he's finished, that he is not capable. He is still a big threat, but for whatever reason right now we are adjusting to what we are seeing," he said.

Whether the Yankees keep him on the bench or put him in another postseason game, "it doesn't mean by doing so we're not going to have to deal with legitimate questions," Cashman said.

"That's all for another day," he said. "All we are concentrating on is the here and now and what is best for us today."

The 37-year-old slugger with 647 career home runs didn't like his seat in the dugout.

"I'm not happy about it. Obviously, you come to the ballpark feeling you can help the team win. When you see your name is not in the lineup, it's obviously disappointing," Rodriguez said before Game 4 on Wednesday night. "You've got to accept being a cheerleader and also make sure that you're ready when you're number's called."

While Rodriguez was surrounded by a pack of reporters on the field Wednesday, some Tigers looked on in bewilderment as Detroit took batting practice.

"I've played this game for a long time and bottom line is, anytime I'm in any lineup, I think that lineup is better. It has a better chance to win," A-Rod said.

"I don't care if it's an All-Star Game. I feel I can bring that type of impact and I'm also at any point ready to break through. I thought my at-bats in some of those games got a little bit better. The last two, I hit two rockets. Anytime I'm in the box the game can change and everyone knows that," he said.

The firestorm may not end any time soon. He has $114 million and five years remaining on his contract ? and a no-trade clause.

"You know, the one thing about this game, as we've all appreciated over time, is that you're going to have some good times and you're going to have some tough times," Cashman said. "But when you're going through the tough times, it doesn't have to be the end-all and be-all. Opportunities will exist to continue to get back off that mat and get back in the ring and battle."

Yankees president Randy Levine and Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria joked last spring about sending A-Rod to Miami. The conversation took place when the Yankees played a pair of exhibitions to open the Marlins' new ballpark.

"Alex is Mr. Miami," Loria told him.

"Take him. Tell me what you're willing to do," Levine said before the pair laughed.

Said Levine Wednesday: "It's funny. You can't even joke with somebody anymore."

Cashman flatly denied that the team has had trade discussions concerning Rodriguez.

He said manager Joe Girardi has the final say on the lineup, but a move like benching Rodriguez is discussed higher in the organization as well.

"The relationship I have with the manager is strong, and we always ? that's the way I want it to be," Cashman said. "We always go through what the lineup should be and how it should look we think. He asks my opinion. He asks his coaches' opinion, and that's the way it's been."

Granderson joined A-Rod on the bench after another hitless night Tuesday dropped him to 3 for 29 in the postseason. Granderson hit 43 homers with 106 RBIs this season.

"These are also the guys that got us the best record in the American League and put up the highest run total in our league, or one of the highest run totals in our league, so they're also the reason for a lot of good that's taken place," Cashman said.

"But in the short-term right now it's been bad. Is that a true snapshot of what their contributions are and who they are as players? It's not. But it's certainly something we're dealing with and living with right now, and we're doing everything we possibly can to make the adjustment and get it going," he said.

Nick Swisher, who was benched in Game 3, returned to the lineup in right field. Eric Chavez started at third base in place of Rodriguez. Brett Gardner started in Granderson's normal spot. Shortstop Derek Jeter is out for the season because of a broken ankle.

"It's not that I want to sit Alex Rodriguez," Girardi said. "But the struggles have continued, like for some other players as well, and I've sat some other players as well."

Rodriguez has looked particularly overmatched against right-handers, going 0 for 18 with 12 strikeouts in the postseason. Detroit's entire playoff rotation is right-handed, including Game 4 starter Max Scherzer.

In Game 3, Girardi let Raul Ibanez hit against left-hander Phil Coke in the ninth inning, and Ibanez struck out to end the game. The switch-hitting Swisher ? not Rodriguez ? was in the on-deck circle preparing to pinch-hit.

"I was ready to hit, and I was just waiting for my number to be called," Rodriguez said.

A New York Post report, citing an unidentified witness, said A-Rod flirted with two attractive female fans near the New York dugout after he was pinch-hit for late in Game 1 against Detroit.

"I addressed that yesterday and I said it was laughable," Rodriguez said Wednesday. "I do think that some of the criticism out there is very fair, and I can live with that, but some of the other stuff is unfair."

Donald Trump offered his two cents Wednesday, calling Rodriguez "selfish" on Twitter but saying Girardi should play his normal starters.

"They got you there," Trump tweeted.

Rodriguez said he's still supportive of Girardi, and he didn't want to speculate of what this postseason could mean for his future in New York.

"One thing I never do is I never quit, and I just keep competing until the end," Rodriguez said.

With the Yankees trying to stave off the end of their season, Girardi and Cashman apparently felt they were better off without A-Rod in the starting lineup.

"We're not afraid to make calls. We're hoping we're going to make the right ones," Cashman said. "But, hey, you are in a position to make decisions, and you have to make tough ones. I don't think we are afraid to make tough ones. We'd rather be in a position where you can run it all out there and it is nice and easy and it's going to work at all times, but that's not the nature of the beast of baseball."

(AP) ? Matt Carpenter always tries to stay ready, keeping an assortment of gloves nearby. That's his job.

The St. Louis Cardinals' utilityman took on a new role in Game 3 of the NL championship series: game-changer.

Carpenter hit a two-run homer after subbing for Carlos Beltran and the Cardinals chased Matt Cain before a 3?-hour rain delay in the seventh inning of a 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night for a 2-1 series lead.

"It was definitely a surprise," Carpenter said. "I didn't even realize Carlos had hurt himself, there was really no thought process.

"I was in the game before I had time to think about it," he said.

Beltran strained his left knee running out a double-play ball in the first inning and the Cardinals said he was day to day. He's had issues off and on with the knee throughout the season, but played in 151 games and had 619 at-bats, his most since 2008.

Kyle Lohse worked around a season-worst five walks in 5 2-3 innings. Mitchell Boggs struck out Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt with two on to end the seventh. Jason Motte earned the first two-inning save of his career to reward what remained of a sellout crowd of 45,850 that stuck around ? perhaps a third ? for a game that lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes, about a half-hour shorter than the delay.

"They said if we didn't score I was going to go out there. I was in the clubhouse running around, I've never really had to sit around like that," Motte said. "It was probably the most nervous I've ever been."

Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro had two hits and a clean game in the field, two days after Matt Holliday rammed him breaking up a double play. Manager Bruce Bochy had said there would be no retaliation, and Game 3 was collision-free.

"I'm sure he was gutting it out," Bochy said of Scutaro. "He was determined to play and made a pretty good recovery."

Bochy said Scutaro made the right play going to first on a run-scoring groundout by Shane Robinson that made it 3-1 in the seventh.

"Well, I don't think he had a play at home. It would have been close," Bochy said. "You can't have a better or smarter second baseman than Marco."

The big winners in a delay that featured about a half-hour without rain while officials awaited a second, smaller front: Beer vendors, by a single out. Alcohol sales are cut off after the seventh inning in all stadiums.

Cain lost for the second time this postseason, giving up three runs on five hits in 6 1-3 innings. The Giants, who entered the game batting just .217 in the postseason, were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Pence, the Giants' fifth-place hitter, also grounded into a double play with runners on first and third in the third and grounded into a force play with a man on to end the fifth.

"I'm the goat tonight," Pence said. "I just didn't the job done."

The Cardinals snapped the Giants' five-game road winning streak in the postseason, three of them this year. Game 4 is in St. Louis on Thursday night, with Adam Wainwright pitching for the Cardinals. Tim Lincecum will start for the Giants.

"He's a guy we want out there. He's been throwing the ball well," Bochy said. "We've got to bounce back."

Bochy said lefty Barry Zito will pitch Game 5 against Lance Lynn, leaving lefty Madison Bumgarner out of the mix for now.

"I think we feel that it's time to give Madison a little break," Bochy said.

Carpenter followed Jon Jay's two-out single with a homer off Cain in his first at-bat of the NLCS.

Beltran is batting .400 in the postseason with three homers and six RBIs, but Carpenter had big numbers against Cain. He was 4 for 4 for his career against Cain, four singles.

"Really, there's no explanation," Carpenter said. "He's one of the best in the game, obviously, I think we all know that."

Cain was ahead 0-2 in the count and Carpenter worked it back to 2-2 before jumping on a hanging slider.

"I try to grind out those at-bats and fight," Carpenter said. "I was in my two-strike mode and I got the pitch. You don't expect things like that to happen."

This one was a much bigger deal, a drive that soared over the Cardinals bullpen in right field and was estimated at 421 feet.

"It was bad pitch. I was trying to go slider in and I didn't get it in there like I should have," Cain said. "I made a bad pitch and it cost us."

Cain was aware Carpenter had hit him well.

"It might affect what you're trying to do because you don't know his weaknesses," Cain said. "But you've still got to make good pitches and that's what I failed to do."

Carpenter entered the game 1 for 5 in the postseason, all five pinch-hit appearances. He had an RBI single in the wild-card playoff against Atlanta. He got 14 of his 46 RBIs in April as the primary sub at first base for injured Lance Berkman.

On Tuesday, Carpenter was among a group of seldom-used hitters trying to stay sharp by facing Jake Westbrook in a simulated game. The rest of the team had the day off.

Umpires called for the tarpaulin right after the Cardinals made it 3-1 on a run-scoring single by Shane Robinson and Cain was lifted.

It was the third game delayed by rain this postseason and a fourth, Game 4 of the Yankees-Tigers ALCS, was postponed later Wednesday night. Two games between the Yankees and Orioles in Baltimore began late because of inclement weather.

The rain intensified less than 10 minutes after the field was covered, chasing most fans who had remained in their seats to that point. Spotters for the National Weather Service reported 60 mph winds in nearby St. Charles County.

A highlight of the delay was a Pac-Man style chase. Ushers pursued and finally apprehended a fan who jumped out of the stands to get a baseball near the warning track in left field, and then jutted in and out of aisles to elude several ushers who had been closing in.

The storm had been widely anticipated. Some forecasts called for a 70 percent chance of rain. Both managers fielded questions Tuesday and Wednesday about whether the probability of precipitation would affect their selection of the starting pitcher.

Both said they couldn't worry about the weather, and the starters combined for 208 pitches.

"I've been caught before where you try to predict what's going to happen with the rain and started," Bochy said. "Just a couple years ago I started a pitcher thinking the same thing and it didn't rain for four or five innings. Then I put my starter in and then it started raining, and so it came back to bite me."

Lohse is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA this postseason despite uncustomary control woes. He was among the majors' best control pitchers this season, averaging 1.62 walks per nine innings.

The Giants entered 70-22 when scoring first, including the postseason, and took the lead in the third on Pablo Sandoval's run-scoring groundout after leadoff hits by Angel Pagan and Scutaro, whose legs looked just fine on an opposite-field double flared just over first baseman Allen Craig's glove.

Beltran leads all players with eight extra-base hits in the 2012 playoffs and is a career .375 hitter in the postseason, highest ever among players with a minimum of 100 at-bats.

NOTES: Danny Cox, who pitched for Cardinals World Series teams in 1985 and 1987, threw a perfect strike on the first pitch. ... According to STATS LLC, Lohse walked two batters in the same inning four times in 2012. ... Jay, who was hit by a pitch to start the game, was plunked 15 times in the regular season. ... Matheny had 122 lineups during the regular season but has stuck with the same eight throughout the postseason. ... The Cardinals are 9-2 in Game 3 of the NLCS, the lone losses coming in 2004 and '05 at Houston. This win ended a streak of scoring at least six runs in the last eight postseason victories dating to Game 3 of the World Series last year, the longest streak of its kind in postseason history. St. Louis entered averaging 7.6 runs in 16 wins the last two postseasons and just 2.3 runs in the 10 losses. ... The Cardinals have played in eight best-of-seven series in which they were tied 1-1 and played Game 3 at home, and have won all of them. They won six of the previous seven series, according to STATS LLC

Corporations and the wealthy funded party conventions

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Companies including Duke Energy, AT&T and Bank of America spent millions of dollars to help stage both the Republican and Democratic conventions, despite restrictions by the Democrats on corporate funding for their event, financial disclosures showed on Wednesday.

The Democratic convention last month marked the first time the party, seeking to set an example, had set limits on sources of funding. It banned donations from corporations and lobbyists and capped individual donations at $100,000.

Technically complying with the corporate money ban, several large corporations contributed free-of-charge goods and services to the account funding the Democratic National Convention. Scores more donated to a separate fund, New American City, exempt from those limits because it was meant to finance activities "of ongoing value" to the host city of Charlotte, North Carolina, and not the Democratic event itself.

Republicans had no similar restrictions on donations for their convention in late August, and brought in money from dozens of corporations as well as some of the biggest individual givers - topped by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson gave the largest sum, $5 million, to the Republican event. The second-largest sum, $4.4 million, came from Florida financier William Edwards and one of his companies, Marketing Solutions Publications Inc.

The biggest financial backers of the Democratic convention, where President Barack Obama officially accepted his party's renomination on September 6, were labor unions, contributing almost $3 million. Unions are a traditional source of cash for Democrats.

Obama is being challenged in the November 6 election by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who accepted the Republican nomination at his party's convention in Tampa, Florida, on August 30.

In all, Republicans raised $55.3 million for their convention, spending $52.4 million and ending with little debt.

On the Democratic side, the main "Charlotte 2012" fund sponsoring the convention raised $24.1 million, according to the filings. It took out a $10.9 million loan and organizers still owe almost that amount after spending $29.9 million.

The New American City fund, which had no funding limitations, raised $19 million and spent $19.6 million. It also holds $1.3 million in debt.

MONEY SHORTFALL

Charlotte-based Duke Energy was the strongest corporate financial muscle behind the Democratic convention, giving $1.6 million in in-kind donations by providing office space and furniture, travel, consulting and parking spaces, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures

The company also wrote a $4.1 million check to New American City. Duke Energy Chief Executive Jim Rogers contributed a total of $339,523 in both regular and in-kind donations for travel and personal staff expenses for fundraising, according to the filings.

Duke also guaranteed a loan that Democratic convention organizers had to take out to cover a money shortfall, party officials have said.

In the weeks leading up to the Republican convention, party sources said they were also coming up short of the financing goal and that operatives were seeking to fill the gap.

IN-KIND DONATIONS

Where Republicans came through with wealthy donors such as hedge fund manager Paul Singer and chemical executive David Koch who gave $1 million each, Democrats had help from companies in-kind gifts.

For instance, AT&T financed $298,562 worth of "delegate bags" and "catering for suites" for the main convention fund and gave $1 million to the New American City fund, according to Wednesday's filings.

The company gave the Republican convention fund $3.1 million, FEC filings showed.

Charlotte-based Bank of America contributed $271,864 worth of furniture and office space to the Democratic convention and gave $5 million to the New American City fund.

The bank gave Republicans $1.1 million, filings showed.

Democrats also received $71,521 worth of catering from Microsoft Corp, $69,590 worth of delegate bags from the Coca-Cola Company and $27,000 worth of food and service items from Costco. Half Moon Bay Brewing Co provided $5,000 worth of beer and Chiquita Brands International Inc supplied $4,000 worth of bananas, among others.

Microsoft and Coca-Cola were among more than 120 companies and organizations that contributed to the Republican convention.

BIGGEST DONORS

Democrats' biggest labor union donors, giving $500,000 each, were the Service Employees International Union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry.

The New American City fund also received large checks from Time Warner Cable Inc, meetings and events planning firm Experient Inc, Wells Fargo & Co bank and Charlotte-based Mechanics & Farmers Bank, according to the filings.

"Beyond showcasing Charlotte for the entire world, the convention generated millions of dollars in economic activity for our community and valuable infrastructure improvements," said Dan Murrey, executive director of the Democratic host committee. "We have accomplished all of this without passing any of these costs on to the taxpayers."

Republicans' other biggest contributions included $3 million from Cisco Systems Inc, $2.5 million from cable systems operator Bright House Networks, $2 million from the oil industry lobby American Petroleum Institute and $1.5 million from the Vinik Family Foundation. Jeff Vinik is the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team.

HOUSTON, Oct. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?On October 10, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military families, will host the Houston Awards Dinner to honor the service and sacrifices of Marines and their families. This year 128 Texas students were awarded college or vocational scholarships through the Scholarship Foundation. The Scholarship Foundation will announce over $1,000,000 in new gifts from Texas donors at the Awards Dinner.

This year, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation celebrates 50 years of honoring Marines by educating their children. The Scholarship Foundation has funded almost 30,000 need-based scholarships valued at over $70,000,000 since its inception in 1962, and has increased scholarship awards by 51 percent since 2006 to provide each and every eligible applicant with educational aid.

"We recognize that in this economy paying for a son or daughter's college education is no longer feasible for many military families. Providing the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen with access to higher education is a wonderful way to thank our nation's heroes for their sacrifices and to ensure that the next generation of leaders have the skills they need to keep America competitive," said Margaret Davis, President and CEO of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Scholarship recipients prove the effectiveness of the program through their academic achievements, with 80 percent graduating from 4-year institutions. Recipients also find professional success after graduation, as demonstrated by Vincent Asaro, a Scholarship Foundation alumnus who will speak at the Houston Awards dinner. Asaro went back to his Alma Mater Duke University twice after graduating with a degree in Public Policy Studies and Political Science ? first to get his law degree and later to get a second advanced degree in entrepreneurial law. Asaro is now Managing Director of an investment firm.

"With the help of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, I was able to attend the University of my choosing, and it was there that I discovered my passion for learning. My success in my undergraduate and graduate programs has supported my career success and greatly transformed my family's economic situation," said Asaro.?

Local veterans will attend the dinner, including Corporal Donny Daughenbaugh, USMC (Ret.) of League City, Tex., who was seriously injured while serving in Iraq. Corporal Daughenbaugh lives with a bullet from an AK47 lodged in his brain, as removing the bullet would be life-threatening. The Scholarship Foundation has already committed funds to send Corporal Daughenbaugh's two young children to college, and is planning ahead to meet the educational needs of future generations of Marine children.

Community leaders who exemplify Marine Corps values will be presented with two awards at the Houston Awards Dinner, including:

  • Semper Fidelis Award, presented to Donald L. "Don" Evans, Former Secretary of Commerce for demonstrating a reoccurring commitment to an effort that contributes to the betterment of society. ?
  • Service Above Self Award, presented to Bill Balleza, News Anchor KPRC Channel 2 News for putting the needs of others before his own and showing a continued commitment to philanthropic efforts that benefit the community.

About the Foundation: Celebrating its 50th year, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to U.S. military families. Since inception, the Foundation has provided more than 30,000 scholarships valued at over $70,000,000 to Marine Corps children whose parents have been killed or wounded in combat or have demonstrated financial need. The Scholarship Foundation has a four-star Charity Navigator rating. For more information on the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation please visit http://www.mcsf.org/.
