Intent: When Business and Ethics Collide: Yoga Journal vs. Hyatt ...

By Chelsea Roff, Managing Editor of Intent Blog

As hundreds of yogis scurried through Embarcadero Center last Thursday, a small group of impassioned hotel workers joined their voices just a few strides away in protest against the Hyatt?hotel chain where the San Francisco Yoga Journal Conference was being held. The demonstration was part of a growing campaign seeking to bring change to an industry accused of abusive and unjust labor practices.

In 2009, Yoga Journal was asked to join the campaign's global boycott of Hyatt hotels and end its financial support of the institution by moving its conference to a different facility. This weekend, the conference was held as scheduled at the Hyatt.

As news of Yoga Journal's decision to "ignore the boycott" broke this week, the blogosphere was abuzz with headlines about the company's failure to stand up for the rights of "exploited hotel workers." My intention with this article is to shed light on the complex dynamics underlying the boycott, the reasons for Yoga Journal's decision, and the questions that remain.

The Facts: A History of the Boycott

The dispute between the hotel and its workers began in 2008, when labor contracts between Hyatt Corporation and its employees expired. Hyatt is legally required to negotiate changes to terms of employment -- which include wages, benefits, workloads, and the right to organize -- with its workers' union, UniteHere. While negotiations for a new contract were underway, the company began replacing non-union housekeeping staff with temporary subcontracted workers. These workers, who are not directly employed by the chain, come at substantially lower cost -- they work for just above minimum wage, and Hyatt isn't required to provide insurance and other benefits because they're not full-time employees.

Three years ago in Boston, three non-union Hyatt hotels fired their entire housekeeping staff (many of whom had been working there for decades) and replaced them with workers from a local temporary agency. The city of Indianapolis even passed an ordinance last July to prevent Hyatt and other hotels from engaging in aggressive subcontracting practices. This practice of outsourcing labor has become increasingly common in many different blue-collar industries and allows large corporations to cut labor costs, increase executive pay and shift any legal responsibility it has to its employees to outside institutions.

That's when UniteHere, the largest hospitality workers' union in the country, began helping Hyatt workers organize protests against the corporation. In June 2009, over 400 hotel workers at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco (the same hotel where Yoga Journal holds its conferences) walked off the job to protest abusive working conditions and unfair labor practices.

"Our injury rates are high, our wages are low, and our immigrant sisters are exploited and cheated by Hyatt's housekeeping subcontractors," reads a call to action on the UniteHere website. "We will no longer suffer in silence. The abuse must end. Hyatt must change."

A month later, UniteHere launched a global boycott of Hyatt Hotels, asking consumers around the world to support workers by pledging not to eat, sleep or meet at Hyatt hotels. But a boycott is only effective if it incurs significant costs to the company in dispute, so UniteHere contacted hundreds of companies and organizations (including Yoga Journal) requesting they hold their events at different facilities. The campaign created major waves from the get go -- nearly every hotel worker union in the nation endorsed the boycott, and even the NFL Players Association and National Organization of Women pledged to cancel their existing events at the Hyatt until a settlement was reached.

Yoga Journal Chooses Not to Join the Boycott

A few days before the conference began, Yoga Journal released an official statement announcing that (at least for 2013) it planned to honor its existing contract and obligations to its faculty and students by continuing with the conference at Hyatt. I spoke to several Yoga Journal staff members this weekend who told me they feel loyal to the workers at this hotel:

"We've been coming to the Hyatt Regency for years," Elana Maggal, Yoga Journal's Conference Director, told me. "We love it here. The management knows us. The housekeepers know us. It wasn't a simple or easy decision -- but ultimately, we felt it was important to honor our existing commitment and support workers whose livelihoods depend on this hotel's business."

While many have accused Yoga Journal of putting profits before ethics, Maggal told me that oversimplifies what was a painstakingly convoluted decision.?When I asked her why Yoga Journal decided not to honor the boycott, she said that moving the conference to a different hotel in San Francisco this year wasn't possible. They looked into possible alternatives, but could find no facilities in the city that could accommodate their size on the date the conference was scheduled. Essentially, she said, it was either cancel the 2013 conference (and upset a whole lot of presenters and attendees who had already bought tickets) or move it to a different city altogether.

So if Yoga Journal had had more time to look for a different facility, could they have potentially moved this year's conference? When I inquired, I learned that they were first approached by UniteHere several years ago; although, Maggal told me, at that time the campaign hadn't "really heated up yet." Perhaps it wasn't clear to the company then that the boycott was a legitimate campaign (often labor disputes like this one are resolved internally or disintegrate completely), but that seems unlikely given the press coverage it received back in July 2009. The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Los Angeles Times and many other major media outlets all reported on the boycott, and given the sheer number of backers, there is no question the campaign had major traction.

Ripple Effects: The Ramifications of Yoga Journal's Decision

Setting aside moral judgments about whether Yoga Journal was right or wrong in not joining the boycott this year, perhaps the more important question being asked is this: What's next? Will Yoga Journal continue to financially support a company that's been branded by some workers as "the worst employer in the hotel industry"? And what would the consequences be -- for Yoga Journal, Hyatt and its workers -- if they move the conference to another hotel next year?

Here's what I found out: Yoga Journal has a multi-year contract with the Hyatt that isn't set to end until 2015. If the company chooses to pull out of their contract with the Hyatt next year, it would cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars -- and in an economy where it's difficult to make any conference economically viable, that could mean no more conferences for Yoga Journal. "There would be a significant penalty to break the contract," Maggal told me. "And it would severely impact our ability to continue holding conferences in the future."

I spoke with Diana Wong, a spokesperson for UniteHere, about the positive impact Yoga Journal could have if it chooses to move its conference.

"Hyatt is a multinational corporation," she told me, "They deal with numbers, with dollars and cents. It doesn't matter how many thousands of housekeepers speak up -- the Hyatt won't listen until it's affecting their bottom line. When Yoga Journal comes back to Hyatt year after year and provides that business opportunity, they're telling Hyatt they can continue abusing their workers."

But if the union already has the support of organizations like the NFL, I asked, could Yoga Journal really make a difference by pulling out? "If Yoga Journal were to honor this boycott and withdraw its monetary support of Hyatt's business practices," Wong said, "That would speak volumes to the executives of this company. They don't see the workers in picket lines. They see spreadsheets and numbers."

I also spoke with David Lewin, the general manager at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, about how the boycott is affecting his business. "The Hyatt is a large company with assets around the world and a reputation that speaks to hospitality. What this union is attempting to do for their own benefit is really just... insane."

Lewin said the workers at his hotel are unionized and that UniteHere is preventing housekeepers from getting wage increases and benefits a contract would afford. He said his employees are "like family" to him, and that he believes that the union does not have their best interest in mind:

Boycotting this hotel doesn't make any sense -- why should my workers suffer? They haven't received a raise in over three years because the union wants to increase their headcount. They're holding their own workers hostage...?In my opinion, it's just pathetic. Disgusting and pathetic.

Is an End to the Boycott on the Horizon?

Everyone I spoke to -- from the housekeepers, to Yoga Journal staff, even Hyatt management -- expressed hope that an agreement between Hyatt and the union will be reached quickly. So far, Hyatt and the union are reported to have agreed on wages and benefits, but are still caught in a stalemate on other contractual issues.

I asked Wong what it would take for UniteHere to end the boycott. She told me they want the Hyatt to concede on three principle points of disagreement:

1. Health and safety standards: Workers want a clause in their contract that would require the hotel implement key health and safety standards recommended to Hyatt in a formal letter?sent?by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. While the letter did not indicate that Hyatt had violated OSHA standards,?an OSHA spokesman said on-site inspections at Hyatt "did identify the presence of ergonomic risk factors associated with the housekeeping tasks."

2. Right to Organize: Hyatt workers want what they call a fair process to support non-unionized workers in forming a union. In legal terms, UniteHere wants the contract to include a card check neutrality agreement, which would allow them to ask workers' at non-union hotels to vote for the formation of a union simply by signing a card. Hyatt, on the other hand, wants to require UniteHere hold secret ballot elections ?(similar to the process of voting in a major political election) because they say such organizing methods are less coercive and more democratic. "Would you let Mitt Romney or Barack Obama sit with you in the voting booth with you when you're deciding who to vote for?" Lewin asked. "As a company, we believe card check methods are coercive."

3. Solidarity clause: The union is advocating for a clause that would allow unionized Hyatt workers to picket, strike or call for boycott in the name of non-unionized Hyatt employees should any future abuses occur.?This is by far the most controversial request UniteHere is making in the negotiations, as such a clause would be largely unprecedented in the hospitality industry. "It destroys the point of a contract," Lewin told me. "Contracts are meant to ensure peace."

Abbott results bode well for spun-off AbbVie

(Reuters) - AbbVie Inc , the new branded pharmaceuticals company spun off by Abbott Laboratories Inc , is off to a good start, judging by fourth-quarter sales of arthritis drug Humira and other products in its medicine chest.

The picture, although healthy, could be more challenging for the remaining Abbott, nicknamed "new Abbott," which continues to sell medical devices, diagnostics, nutritional products and generic drugs, said analysts.

The new Abbott said it expects earnings for 2013, excluding special items, of $1.98 to $2.04 per share, in line with its earlier guidance and above the average Wall Street forecast of $1.95.

The company has not yet provided complete earnings data for full-year 2012, making it difficult for investors to estimate how much earnings could grow in 2013. The company is still analyzing the numbers because of the split and may eventually restate some figures, analysts said.

Leerink Swann analyst Danielle Antalffy said comments by company executives during an investor conference call suggest Abbott sales may grow in the mid-single-digit percentage range this year, and that earnings would grow in the high-single-digit range.

But a big worry, Antalffy said, is whether Abbott can revive sales of its branded generic medicines, which the company calls established pharmaceuticals. Sales of the products slipped 4 percent in 2012 to $5.1 billion.

"The business, which represents 25 percent of company sales, has been underperforming," she said, adding that revenue forecasts for the business are difficult because they rely on data from so many local markets and countries.

Fourth-quarter sales of all products that remain with Abbott were $5.7 billion, roughly in line with analysts' forecasts. Although the company did not provide comparable sales figures for the fourth quarter of 2011, Antalffy estimated sales rose 4 to 5 percent in the most recent quarter.

Analysts said trends for AbbVie, based on more-detailed data for its products provided by Abbott on Wednesday, were easier to interpret.

Global sales of branded drugs that now belong to AbbVie rose 7.4 percent to $5.14 billion in the fourth quarter, topping the $4.8 billion estimate of Wells Fargo analyst Larry Biegelsen. The rise would have been 8.5 percent if not for the stronger dollar, which lowers the value of sales in overseas markets.

Sales of Humira, by far AbbVie's biggest product, jumped 23 percent to $2.68 billion, about $200 million above Biegelsen's estimate.

That represented a marked acceleration of sales growth from the prior two quarters and underscores how reliant AbbVie is on the injectable product, which is expected to become the world's top-selling medicine this year.

AbbVie, spun off by Abbott earlier this month, is expected to report its interpretation of the fourth-quarter results and its 2013 forecast on January 30.

Among top product lines still sold by Abbott, sales of nutritional brands jumped 10.2 percent to $1.71 billion in the fourth quarter, and sales of laboratory diagnostics grew 3.8 percent to $908 million. Sales of diabetes care products rose 3.1 percent to $362 million, reversing a 10 percent decline seen in the prior quarter.

Abbott shares were 0.3 percent lower in afternoon trading, while AbbVie shares rose 2.2 percent, both on the New York Stock Exchange.

Don?t ignore the snore: Snoring may be early sign of future health risks

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Here's a wake-up call for snorers: Snoring may put you at a greater risk than those who are overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The increased thickening in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries responsible for many vascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," says lead study author Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"Our study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that isolated snoring may not be as benign as first suspected. So instead of kicking your snoring bed partner out of the room or spending sleepless nights elbowing him or her, seek out medical treatment for the snorer."

The study reveals changes in the carotid artery with snorers -- even for those without sleep apnea -- likely due to the trauma and subsequent inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring.

Study results will be presented January 25 at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has been submitted to The Laryngoscope journal for publication.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- a sleep disorder that occurs due to the collapse of the airway in the throat during sleep and causes loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing -- has long been linked to cardiovascular disease, along with a host of other serious health issues.

But the risk for cardiovascular disease may actually begin with snoring, long before it becomes OSA. Until now, there was little evidence in humans to show a similar connection between snoring and cardiovascular risk.

For the Henry Ford study, Dr. Deeb and senior study author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., reviewed data for 913 patients who had been evaluated by the institution's sleep center.

Patients, ages 18-50, who had participated in a diagnostic sleep study between December 2006 and January 2012 were included in the study. None of the participants had sleep apnea.

In all, 54 patients completed the snore outcomes survey regarding their snoring habits, as well as underwent a carotid artery duplex ultrasound to measure the intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries.

Carotid intima-media thickness, a measurement of the thickness of the innermost two layers of the arterial wall, may be used to detect the presence and to track the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Intima-media thickness is the first sign of carotid artery disease.

Compared to non-snorers, snorers were found to have a significantly greater intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries, the study finds.

The study also revealed no statistically significant differences in intima-media thickness for patients with or without some of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease -- smoking, diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.

"Snoring is generally regarded as a cosmetic issue by health insurance, requiring significant out-of-pocket expenses by patients. We're hoping to change that thinking so patients can get the early treatment they need, before more serious health issues arise."

The Henry Ford research team plans to conduct another long-term study on this topic, particularly to determine if there's an increased incidence of cardiovascular events in patients who snore.

Along with Drs. Deeb and Yaremchuk, Henry Ford study co-authors are Paul Judge, M.D.; Ed Peterson, Ph.D.; and Judith C. Lin, M.D.

Reference Process -- Readings - Library Technicians: Education ...

You may call it, Reference Process or Reference Transaction or Reference Work in the library environment!!!

Whatever it is called by the librarians (traditional, modern, virtual, etc.), there is chain process, that starts with the user need, need analysis, need negotiation, consulting appropriate sources, customizing search strategy, search, retrieval, evaluation of search results, modification if required, and delivery or suggesting alternative sources...

"Nearly forty years ago now, Shera (1964) not only foresaw the use of computing to take some of the menial labor out of library reference work, but he also proposed a method for achieving that goal. Shera wrote that ?the really great promise of automation is to be sought in? the opportunity it affords to analyze the reference process and re-define reference service? (p. 203). He saw this redefinition as removing the ?fetch and carry? aspects, and the potential to raise the intellectual level of reference work. To achieve this end, Shera proposed an agenda for action: first, analyze the processes involved in reference service, and how questions are handled by humans in those processes, and second, create algorithms to represent these processes. Forty years later, Shera?s agenda still provides a sound course of action." Jeffrey Pomerantz, Question Types in Digital Reference: An Evaluation of Question Taxonomies. Andes glaciers are rapidly vanishing

The glaciers of the Andes Mountains have retreated at an unprecedented rate in the past three decades, with more ice lost than at any other time in the last 400 years.

That's according to a new review of research that combines on-the-ground observations with aerial and satellite photos, historical records and dates from cores of ice extracted from the glaciers. The retreat is worse in the Andes than the average glacier loss around the world, the researchers report Tuesday in the journal The Cryosphere.

" Tropical Andes glaciers have lost on average between 30 to 50 percent (depending on the mountain ranges) of their surface since the late 70s," study researcher Antoine Rabatel, a scientist at the Laboratory for Glaciology and Environmental Geophysics in Grenoble, France, wrote in an email to LiveScience.??

    Sensitive glaciers
The Andes Mountains of South America are home to 99 percent of tropical glaciers ?? permanent rivers of ice at high enough elevations not to be affected by the types of balmy temperatures usually associated with the tropics. But these glaciers are particularly sensitive to climate change, because there is little seasonality in temperatures in the tropics, Rabatel said.

"Glaciers of the tropical Andes react strongly and more rapidly than other glaciers on Earth to any changes in climate conditions," he said. [ Ice World: Gallery of Awe-Inspiring Glaciers ]

To piece together the story of the glaciers over the past centuries, Rabatel and his colleagues drew on disparate strands of data. Historical records from early settlements reveal glacier boundaries, as does ice core data taken by drilling down into the annual layers of ice that make up glaciers. Even the lichens (symbiotic organisms made of fungus and an algae or bacteria) that survive on the rocky debris, or moraine, that forms around a glacier have a story to tell. Researchers can date these lichens to determine how long ago the rocks were exposed and free of ice.

Aerial photographs dating back to the 1950s and satellite imagery from as far back as the 1970s also track the glaciers' movements. Finally, direct, ground-based observations have been in place at many glaciers since the 1990s.

    Retreat of the glaciers
All together, the data tell a story of ice loss. The Andean glaciers reached their maximum extents in the Little Ice Age, a cool period that lasted from about the 16th to 19th centuries. In the outer tropics of Peru and Bolivia, the glaciers hit their maximums in the 1600s, the researchers found. The highest Andean glaciers maxed out in the 1730s or so, while lower-elevation glaciers reached their peaks around the 1830s.

Since then, the glaciers have gradually withdrawn, with one period of accelerated melt in the late 1800s and a second, much larger, accelerated melt period in the past three decades. Since the 1970s, the glaciers have followed a pattern of periods of accelerated melt with two to three years in between of slower retreat and occasional advance (or growth). But while there have been scattered good years for the glaciers in which more new ice formed than was lost, the overall average has been permanently negative over the past 50 years, the researchers wrote.

      4. Humans called 'a plague on the Earth'

The average loss of 30 percent to 50 percent varies widely from glacier to glacier, Rabatel said. Some small glaciers have completely disappeared, such as the Chacaltaya glacier of Bolivia, which was once the world's highest ski resort, but which vanished in 2009.

Lower-altitude glaciers below about 17,700 feet (5400 meters) above sea level are melting twice as fast as those at higher elevations. These low glaciers, which make up the majority of Andes glaciers, are expected to vanish within years or decades, Rabatel said.

Precipitation in the region has not changed, the researchers found, but temperatures have risen nearly 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit (0.1 degrees Celsius) per decade over the last 70 years. That means it's likely atmospheric heat rather than lack of snow is driving the glacier retreat.

The looming loss of the glaciers is a major problem for the people living in arid regions west of the Andes, Rabatel said.

"The supply of water from high-altitude glacierized mountain chains is important for agricultural and domestic consumption, as well as for hydropower," he wrote.

How To Efficiently Deal With Back Pain ? Dentistry, Health and Fitness

Every year, millions of adults in all age groups suffer from the discomfort and stress associated with chronic back pain. In fact, this condition is one of the most common ailments reported in the United States. The information in this article offers insight into the various options available to those who experience back pain.

Maintain proper posture at all times to alleviate back pain. Many adults have pain from being hunched over and not even realizing it. When you are sitting or standing, make sure that your back is extremely straight. It might feel uncomfortable at first. Although your body will get used to it, and your back will thank you later.

Always avoid any back surgery unless it is absolutely necessary. Sometimes a slipped disc can be surgically repaired, but there may be other ways to treat it. Some will opt for the surgery because they believe it?s a quicker fix for back pain, but anything can go wrong under the knife.

One easy way to help alleviate back pain is to simply find a good heating pad. Wrap the heating pad around the back of your chair when you are sitting down, or lay on it while in bed. Doing this in small intervals throughout the day will greatly decrease your back pain.

High stress and fast-paced living can easily lead to both acute and chronic back pain. As well, it is important to alleviate stress and be aware of different surroundings and practices, especially if you already have been suffering from back pain. While life moves fast and mental stress is hardly unavoidable, it is important to pay attention to ways to improve your way of life.

Try physical therapy. If you think that your back pain has been caused by some recent trauma to your back, a physical therapist can help you strengthen your back so you can get full function back again. It can also be helpful to have someone supportive helping you with your back.

A tried-and-true way to relieve back pain is to use a heating pad. By using an electric heating pad, you can work to soothe the muscles and pain associated with moderate and even severe back pain. Also, heating pads have various settings to allow you to control the level of heat you desire.

Soak in a warm tub if you want relief from your back pain. The warm water can relax the muscles that have tightened up, which are causing you the pain. When the stiffness is relieved and your back becomes more flexible, you will feel more comfortable, and you will feel better.

In order to prevent back pain and injury, you should face the object you are lifting, bend at the knees, tuck in your stomach muscles and avoid jerking or twisting. If you jerk, twist or bend at the waist, you are very likely to get injured or make any existing back pain worse.

Instead of suffering in silence from your back pain, why not use the advice in this article to set the ball in motion in your efforts to find treatment. Nobody should have to live their life in pain. Fortunately, there are many options that can greatly reduce or eliminate even the most severe back pain.

Do you need remedies for mid back pain right side?

    Various Artists

West of Memphis: Voices for Justice

    (Sony Music)

The story of injustice is one that has, for two decades, been one in which The West Memphis Three lived. A surreal tale of three Arkansas teenagers (Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin) accused of murdering a trio of second-graders (Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore) in what was thought to be a Satanic ritual, before being, many believe, wrongfully convicted, perhaps even corruptly so.

For 20 years they fought for their freedom, aided and abetted by high-profile fighters and believers, who kept their story alive. There have been concerts and tributes, and there have been documentaries including last year?s acclaimed, Peter Jackson-produced West of Memphis, which this album is considered a companion piece to. And a fitting one at that. For while the three men were finally released last year, anything resembling triumph and joy has to be tempered with anger, sadness and everything that comes with a loss of innocence and half a lifetime, which this all-star album gives fitting voice to.

From Henry Rollins and Johnny Depp?s sombre spoken-word readings of death row letters from Echols and Natalie Maines haunting version of Pink Floyd?s Mother to Band of Horses performing live a somewhat defeated Dumpster World, Bob Dylan beautifully defiant on Ring Them Bells, and Eddie Vedder hopeful yet mournful on Satellite, it?s an eclectic, emotional and taxing journey. One that only hints at the toll of a life of injustice lived.

The godfathers of political rock have been raging against the machine for more than 30 years now, so we could hardly expect them to tone it down now when economic disparity and unchecked greed in America appears to be as rampant as they always claimed it to be. As with many of their albums, there?s a risk of these 16 songs ? clocking in for a grand total of just over 30 minutes ? blending together into one hazy gallop of indignation.

But vocalist Greg Graffin and guitarist Brett Gurewitz maintain their uncanny ability to cut through the double-guitar thunder with sharp hooks and songcraft, hitting a peak with the breathlessly catchy harmonizing on the poppy In their Hearts is Right.

    The Joy Formidable

    Wolf?s Law

    (Atlantic)

There something undeniably endearing about an act that still subscribes to a bigger-is-better mantra of rock ?n? roll.

Subtlety be damned, this Welsh trio follows up its appropriately named 2011 debut, The Big Roar, with an album of such ambition and meticulously crafted grandiosity that it makes Billy Corgan sound like Bon Iver moping about a cabin with his acoustic guitar by comparison.

Not surprisingly, the not-so-secret weapon continues to be vocalist-guitarist Ritzy Bryan, and not just because she possesses the sort of yearning and focused vocals that can cut through the angriest of sonic storms.

While there?s no denying her skill at thundering guitar riffs ? check out the metallic fury that opens Bats, for instance ? it?s her melodicism that pushes the 12-song Wolf?s Law past mere guitar heroics and multi-layered bluster into something that bears repeated listens.

Melody shines through on everything from the tightly-coiled ballad Silent Treatment, to the punk blast of Little Blimp and near prog-rock fussiness of epics such as Maw Maw Song and the Leopard and the Lung.

    Classified

    Classified

    (Universal)

Luke Boyd, better known as Nova Scotia rapper Classified, isn?t short on musical ideas ? this self-titled effort is his 15th release in 18 years. As solid as his output might be, he hasn?t quite come up with a bona fide smash ? one of those songs that helps to define a genre, year or Internet meme. He came close with 2009?s O Canada, a hip-hop version of our national anthem, yet the patriotic ditty felt somewhat contrived (or un-Canadian) ? and certainly didn?t find much of an audience outside our borders.

On his latest album, Classified nudges closer to international ubiquity with Inner Ninja, a jaunty, elbow-swinging number, which swings with the jump of half-strummed guitars and the mellifluous vocals of singer-songwriter David Myles. Another possibility: Three Foot Tall, a Hova-esque times-are-tough track featuring a children?s choir, wistful flute, bouncy piano and rhymes about, ?when you feel alone, play my songs and that keeps us connected.?

Next to these radio-friendly tracks, the rest of Classified sounds grittier, or perhaps closer to his heart, but no less memorable. Growing Pains is a touching ditty dedicated to his two daughters; Hi-Dea?s is a soulful piano ?n? string jam about weed and the writing process, while the bluesy That?s What I Do recaps Classified?s life and love of hip-hop, which also includes one of the album?s two references to No. 99. The second, New School/Old School, which feels like a ?70s Brooklyn street jam, features Kayo and Classified comparing/making fun of each other?s hip-hopness. Whether any of these tunes become the next Call Me Maybe, expect Classified to keep trying ? even if takes him another 15 albums over the next 18 years.

    Renny Wilson

    Sugarglider

    (Mint Records)

Mint Records? love affair with Edmonton-bred acts (see: indie rockers Hot Panda) continues with the recent signing of E-Town romantic pop newcomer Ren? Wilson. Informed by minimalist post-disco experimentalist Arthur Russell, Wilson?s debut album Sugarglider finds its drive in smooth sax and disco bass lines, enveloped in a psychedelic gaze not unlike recent re-ups of the quiet-storm genre like Destroyer?s Kaputt or the lo-fi bump of Toro Y Moi. Opening track By And By offers an instant splash of slacker cool, and each track segues into the next, like some kind of punch-drunk ?80s dance floor mini-movie. Wilson doesn?t so much croon as he whines, contrasting his bell-bottomed funk with a white- boy moan. And there lies Sugarglider?s main weakness: For an album that offers such compelling soul weirdness, the end result feels strained and thin, especially vocally. Sugarglider is sweet, but the initial rush fails to linger long enough.

    Cindy Ratzlaff: 3 Low-Cost Marketing Strategies for Self-Published ...

Every author dreams of writing a bestseller. Dreaming isn?t enough. The self-published author is both writer and publisher and is the director of the entire publishing process. This includes cover design, interior layout, marketing and promotion. Standing out from the crowd of hundreds of thousands of other self-published authors and garnering attention for an unknown author, and his or her book, is a daunting undertaking. Budget, time, connections and strategy all play into a successful book launch. Most authors, however, are short on budget so here are three free steps every author can take right away to help increase the visibility for their work.

If you write it, they will come. IF you go find them and lead them to it. ~ Cindy Ratzlaff

These three inexpensive, but effective, strategies will help self-published authors present their work to book buyers. As an author who has been published by a legacy publisher and as a self-published author, I?ve employed these strategies myself in both cases and can attest to their ease, cost effectiveness and efficacy.Author Central

Author Central is a free feature of Amazon.com and self-published books need to be on Amazon. Amazon is one of the most trusted online booksellers and people feel comfortable purchasing from Amazon. Being there is a key element in a good distribution strategy. Author Central provides authors with a page for their photo, bio, promotional videos, blog feed, Twitter feed, and promotional tour schedule. An Author Central page is indexed in search on Amazon and will be served up to book buyers searching for an author by name. It?s also a good tool for introducing an author to new readers. This is free to set up and every author should take advantage of this marketing real estate.? The author?s page on Author Central will appear at the bottom of the sales page for their book and gives readers more information about the author at point of purchase; right when they?re making the decision whether or not to buy the book.

    Facebook

One billion users is a very large ecosystem and most authors already have a personal profile. There are several very sophisticated marketing opportunities on Facebook, but here are two free and easy ways to begin.? Upload a 403 x 403 pixel photo of the cover of the book to Facebook and write a post announcing the publication.? At the end of the post include the direct link to the page where the book can be purchased; Amazon, Barnes & Noble, author website or other. Next mark the post as ?Life Event,? a Facebook designation found in the upper right hand side of the status update box. The choose ?Published a Book? from the Life Event Options. Facebook will create a large, 2-column posting with this update and send it out into the news feed to nearly all of the author?s connections. This one action significantly increases the visibility of the newly published book within the author?s own circle of contacts.? Keeping a close eye on the comments for this post and responding with a request to help spread the word can mobilize the author?s friends and family to help with promotion. All hands on deck should be the self-published author?s watch words.

    YouTube

YouTube is the second largest search engine, behind Google, and is owned by Google. Creating a Book Trailer, similar to a movie trailer, and posting it to YouTube gives the author a high value marketing piece to share on social media, in blogs and on YouTube itself. Authors can create a 30 second video that includes images, words, a link to purchase the book and even music without any special equipment or knowledge at Animoto. This wonderful free tool has easy to use templates that make creating a 30 second digital commercial for a book simple. To make longer videos, remove the Animoto logo and access a library of professional templates, authors will need a pro account, which is $240 per year, or click on the Animoto link above and get a 20% discount (full disclosure: signing up through that link gives readers a discount and I get a little something from Animoto).? I?ve been an Animoto pro user for 3 years and cannot recommend it enough for authors. Here?s a sample of one of the first Animoto videos I created. It took me 10 minutes. It?s fun, easy and authors can upload the video to their Author Central page, YouTube, Facebook and their website.

There is so much more that authors must do to market and promote their self-published books, but these three free marketing strategies are a good beginning. Create an author profile at Author Central, add a Life Event on Facebook and produce a book trailer video at Animoto to upload to YouTube and share around the web. In fact, I invite authors to share the link to their Author Central pages or Animoto book trailers below to promote their books to other readers and to encourage new authors to use free marketing and promotional tools.

Samsung 'Galaxy Tab 3' devices said to be in the works along with mystery tab

    Android Central

Last week brought news of a possible 8-inch Galaxy Note tablet coming at Mobile World Congress; today we have more details of more future Samsung tablets from the same source. Samsung fansite SamMobile reports via “Korean insiders” that the company will soon launch a new line of Galaxy Tabs, including a possible 7 and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 (codenamed “Santos”), and a new mystery tablet known only as “Roma.”

Exact hardware specs for the Galaxy Tab 3 line are uncertain, but SamMobile says the Galaxy Tab 3 devices will likely come with a 5-megapixel camera, and be available in Wifi and Wifi/3G configurations. So no major surprises there, and we’d fully expect to see these new tablets make their debut at Mobile World Congress in late February.

But the most interesting part of today’s report concerns the tablet codenamed “Roma,” which apparently carries the product number GT-P8200. That’s noteworthy because it’s just a stone’s throw away from the Nexus 10’s GT-P8110. Samsung’s usually pretty deliberate with its model numbers, so we might speculate that this “Roma” device could sport similar specs to the Samsung-built Nexus tablet. Question is, what separates it from the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3?

As with the Galaxy Tab 3 series, the “Roma” is said to be slated for release sometime in the first half of the year in 16GB and 32GB flavors.

Remember we’ll be live at Mobile World Congress next month to bring you full coverage of whatever new tablets Samsung announces.

Doonya classes offer fitness as Bollywood dance party

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Doonya, which combines high-energy aerobics and conditioning with the hip-swaying, arm-swirling exuberance of Indian folk, pop and classical dance, is a Bollywood-based workout that experts say can be fun and effective.

Named for the Hindi word for world, Doonya is the brainchild of two fitness instructors who tapped their heritage for inspiration. It draws on the infectious song and dance numbers popularized by the prolific Hindi-film industry based in Mumbai, nicknamed Bollywood, where movies usually feature intricate love sagas and plot twists.

"Our parents are from India so it was a way of connecting with our roots," said Priya Pandya, a New Jersey native who created the workout with Mississippian Kajal Desai. "We grew up learning dance. We both wanted to bring Bollywood dance to the world."

Doonya classes are held in the Washington, D.C. area and in New York City and will launch in Los Angeles next month. A DVD is due for release in February.

Jessica Matthews, a spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), said in addition to being addictive and fun, dance fitness classes can provide an effective workout.

Research studies sponsored by ACE on Zumba, a Latin-based dance workout, and Qi Dance, which merges the Eastern concept of Qi with world music, found them to be sound fitness routines.

"These modalities do elicit cardio-respiratory response. You can gain lean muscle mass, and when there's a core sequence it can strengthen that area of the body," she said. "Dance fitness really resonates with some people. They get hooked on it and form communities around it."

    FUSION OF MUSIC

Pandya, a yoga teacher, said the one-hour Doonya classes are carefully structured to ensure a full-body workout.

"We always make sure there's a warm up," she explained. "Then there's the peak of the class with the most intense cardio. Finally as you slowly come down there's more conditioning and a cool down."

She said the workout can burn 600 calories if done full-out.

"We vary the playlist class by class," she said, "to incorporate different dance versions."

The Bolly-Pop portion fuses traditional South Asian styles with hip-hop and jazz, while classical conditioning borrows from ancient styles and emphasizes intricate hand motions. Pop Bhangra is an energetic dance from the northern India in which the basic motion focuses on squeezing the shoulder blades together while keeping the arms tight.

Desai, who holds a fitness certification from the ACE, said instructors stress the connection of movement to muscle.

"The more that you understand that the more you'll condition your muscles," she explained. "Some people come to class just for cardio, which is fine, but for others we've developed the routine so that connection is there."

Enthusiast Magdalena Slawecka credits Doonya with bringing fun back into her fitness routine.

"I'd been working out for a few years but I wasn't enjoying it," said Slawecka, a 45-year-old pharmaceutical representative based in Brooklyn, New York. "But I absolutely love the energy of Doonya. I tell people it's my Prozac."

Slawecka, a longtime dance lover, said she had given up ballroom dancing for want of a partner.

"I watched my first Bollywood movie about a year ago and I fell in love with the music and dancing. So I googled and went," she said. "With Doonya you don't need a partner."

Her enjoyment, she added, is also about the people she has met.

"When you come to Doonya you have people who have a love of the same thing," she said. "You don't get that at the gym."

Slawecka said through Doonya she has also discovered India.

"(It's) such a fascinating country. Not only the dance, but the culture, the food," she said. "My daughter and I just went to India in November," she said, something she doubts she'd have done without Doonya.

"I was involved in a wedding there," she said. "I danced at someone's wedding in India."

concede Obama Acceptance Speech Prop 30 Election 2012 Michigan Election Results Missouri Election Results Amendment 64

Swearing age-old oath, Obama steps into 2nd term

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama was sworn in for four more years Sunday in a simple ceremony at the White House, embarking on a second-term quest to restore a still-shaky economy and combat terrorists overseas while swearing an age-old oath to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution.

"I did it," a smiling president said to his daughter Sasha seconds after following Chief Justice John Roberts in reciting the oath of office. First lady Michelle Obama and the couple's other daughter, Malia, were among relatives who bore witness.

The quiet moments were prelude to Monday's public inaugural events when Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol before a crowd expected to reach into the hundreds of thousands and a television audience counted in the millions.

The trappings were in place ? the flag-draped stands ready outside the Capitol and the tables set inside for a traditional lunch with lawmakers. Across town, a specially made reviewing stand rested outside the White House gates for the president and guests to watch the traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.

A crowd of perhaps 800,000 was forecast, less than the million-plus that thronged to the nation's capital four years ago to witness the inauguration of the first black president in American history.

The weather forecast was encouraging, to a point. High temperatures were predicted for the lower 40s during the day, with scattered snow showers during the evening, when two inaugural balls closed out the official proceedings.

The 44th chief executive is only the 17th to win re-election, and his second-term goals are ambitious for a country where sharp political differences have produced gridlocked government in recent years.

Restoration of the economy to full strength and pressing the worldwide campaign against terrorists sit atop the agenda. He also wants to reduce federal deficits and win immigration and gun control legislation from Congress, where Republicans control the House.

If he needed a reminder of the challenges he faces, he got one from half-way around the globe. An Algerian security official disclosed the discovery of 25 additional bodies at a gas plant where radical Islamists last week took dozens of foreign workers hostage.

In Washington, tourists strolled leisurely on an unseasonably warm day.

"I'm very proud of him and what he's trying to do for immigration, women's rights, what they call 'Obamacare,' and concerns for the middle class," said Patricia Merritt, a retired educator from San Antonio, in town with her daughter and granddaughter to see the inauguration and parade as well as historic sites. "I think he's more disrespected than any other president," she added, referring to his critics.

Sean Payton, an operations analyst from Highland Ranch, Colo., said he hoped to hear "a nice eloquent speech that makes people feel good about being an American."

Republicans lent a touch of bipartisanship to the weekend.

"We always want any president to succeed, to do well, that means America does well and Americans do well," Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming said on CNN's "State of the Union."

Obama took the oath in the White House Blue Room where portraits of Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and John Tyler grace the walls. He placed a hand on a Bible held by his wife. His daughters stood nearby.

The nation's political divisions seemed scarcely to intrude as Obama, a Democrat, shook hands with Roberts, a Republican appointee, in a rite that renews American democracy every four years. Unlike four years ago, when Roberts stumbled verbally, the chief justice recited the oath without error.

Before the swearing-in, the president listened from a second-row pew at the 175-year-old Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church as the Rev. Jonathan V. Newman asked God's blessing for the him and his family. "But also prepare him for battle ... because sometimes enemies insist on doing it the hard way," he said.

Like Obama, Biden began his day early. He attended Catholic Mass at his official residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory a few miles from the White House. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice and an Obama appointee, administered the oath of office.

Biden then joined Obama at the cemetery, where the two men placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns and observed a moment of silence as a bugler sounded "Taps."

More than 140 nations adopt treaty to cut mercury

GENEVA (AP) ? A new and legally binding international treaty to reduce harmful emissions of mercury was adopted Saturday by more than 140 nations, capping four years of difficult negotiations but stopping short of some of the tougher measures that proponents had envisioned.

The new accord aims to cut mercury pollution from mining, utility plants and a host of products and industrial processes, by setting enforceable limits and encouraging shifts to alternatives in which mercury is not used, released or emitted.

Mercury, known to be a poison for centuries, is natural element that cannot be created or destroyed. It is released into the air, water and land from small-scale artisanal gold mining, coal-powered plants, and from discarded electronic or consumer products such as electrical switches, thermostats and dental amalgam fillings. Mercury compound goes into batteries, paints and skin-lightening creams.

Because it concentrates and accumulates in fish and goes up the food chain, mercury poses the greatest risk of nerve damage to pregnant women, women of child-bearing age and young children. The World Health Organization has said there are no safe limits for the consumption of mercury and its compounds, which can also cause brain and kidney damage, memory loss and language impairment.

A decade ago, Switzerland and Norway began pushing for an international treaty to limit mercury emissions, a process that culminated in the adoption of an accord Saturday after an all-night session that capped a weeklong conference in Geneva and previous such sessions over the past four years.

"It will help us to protect human health and the environment all over the world," Swiss environment ambassador Franz Perrez told a news conference.

But the treaty only requires that nations with artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations, one of the biggest sources of mercury releases, draw up national plans within three years of the treaty entering force to reduce and ? if possible ? eliminate the use of mercury in such operations. Governments also approved exceptions for some uses such as large measuring devices for which there are no mercury-free alternatives; vaccines where mercury is used as a preservative; and products used in religious or traditional activities.

Switzerland, Norway and Japan each contributed $1 million to get the treaty started, but U.N. officials say tens of millions more will be needed each year to help developing countries comply. The money would be distributed through the Global Environment Facility, an international funding mechanism.

The U.N. Environment Program said the treaty will be signed later this year in the southern Japanese city of Minamata, for which it is to be named. After that, 50 nations must ratify it before it comes into force, which officials predicted would happen in three to four years.

So-called Minimata disease, a severe neurological disorder caused by mercury poisoning, was discovered in the late 1950s because of methylmercury escaping from the city's industrial wastewater. The illness, which sickened people who ate contaminated fish, killed hundreds and left many more badly crippled. Some 12,000 people have demanded compensation from Japan's government.

"To agree on global targets is not easy to do," Achim Steiner, the executive director of the U.N. Environment Program, told reporters. "There was no delegation here that wished to leave Geneva without drafting a treaty."

Over the past 100 years, mercury found in the top 100 meters (yards) of the world's oceans has doubled, and concentrations in waters deeper than that have gone up by 25 percent, the U.N. environment agency says, while rivers and lakes contain an estimated 260 metric tons of mercury that was previously held in soils.

The treaty was originally blocked by powers such as the United States, but President Barack Obama's reversal of the U.S. position in early 2009 helped propel momentum for its adoption. China and India also played key roles in ensuring its passage; Asia accounts for just under half of all global releases of mercury.

"We have closed a chapter on a journey that has taken four years of often intense, but ultimately successful, negotiations and opened a new chapter toward a sustainable future," said Fernando Lugris, the Uruguayan diplomat who chaired the negotiations.

Some supporters of a new mercury treaty said they were not satisfied with the agreement.

Joe DiGangi, a science adviser with advocacy group IPEN, said that while the treaty is "a first step," it is not tough enough to achieve its aim of reducing overall emissions. For example, he said, there is no requirement that each country create a national plan for how it will reduce mercury emissions.

His group and some of the residents of Minamata have opposed naming the treaty for their city because they feel it does not do enough to fix the problem.

"This treaty should be called the 'Mercury Convention,' not the 'Minamata Convention," said Takeshi Yasuma, a Japanese activist. "Water pollution resulting in contaminated sediment and fish caused the Minamata tragedy, but the treaty contains no obligations to reduce mercury releases to water and no obligations to clean up contaminated sites."

Treaty proponents called it a good first step, however, and Steiner said the document would evolve over time and hopefully become a stronger instrument.

Ask Engadget best connected exercise bike

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Mårten, a self-styled Swedish geek with a love of statistics who wants to make a lifestyle change in 2013. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm looking for a recumbent exercise bike that's able to hook up to a smartphone or tablet. That way, I could also hook it up to my Withings scale and my ANT+ (Bluetooth 4.0) chest strap. I've got a need to loose weight, so could your readers tell me if they've found anything similar on the market? Thanks!"

Well Mårten, we struck out looking for bikes that just had tablet docks, but you can always just pick up a holder like the Scosche IPD2FR -- which would do a similar job. Of course, perhaps the throng of Engadgeteers will know better, and if you do, let us know downstairs.

simple blood test may predict breast cancer's return

(BlackMediaScoop) Scientists say a simple blood test could predict if the most common form of breast cancer will come back after treatment.

By providing an early warning the technique would spare some women unnecessary treatment with gruelling anti-cancer drugs. Researcher Sambasivarao Damaraju said: ?If we can accurately predict which women are at high risk of breast cancer recurrence, it gives the physicians and oncologists treating these women time to design a more aggressive therapy in the hopes of preventing the cancer from coming back.

The kit, which is being developed in Canada, focuses on something called luminal A breast cancer ? the most common form of the disease and the type generally thought to have the best prognosis.

However, with it making up around 60% of the 50,000 cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year, it still accounts for a substantial number of relapses and deaths. The University of Alberta researchers tested blood samples taken from women when they had been diagnosed with breast cancer years previously.

Other predictor tests in development use the genes from the cancer itself. But the Canadian researchers believe their technique will be more accurate as it uses the DNA a person is born with to work out if they have a predisposition to breast cancer recurring.

It is hoped that in future, the test could be used alongside traditional microscopic techniques to improve the way breast cancer patients are treated. The Canadian charities that funded the research said it would have a ?substantial? impact on ensuring women treated for breast cancer ?continue to live cancer-free lives?.

More research and several years of large-scale testing is needed before the test is marketed. Cancer Research UK said that many scientists, including its own, are trying to perfect such a test.

    What do you think?
