List Of Real Estate AgentsIn case your company sells books on the real estate niche, the best way to market your products would be to buy at the earliest opportunity a list of real estate agents. On the other hand, if you purchase a list of realtors you could start your campaign immediately. The transaction is made immediately and you usually get the email list in a couple of days. The books and guides which you are selling will be promoted particularly for real estate agents that are in fact the ones that you are trying to assist with the information in the books.

In the event your organization offers real estate business making cards services, you need to start promoting them appropriately. Then again, your business may not be specializing in creating business cards. Don?t be concerned if this is your situation. Using a list of real estate agents you could advertise any sort of products relevant to this field starting with desk plates which state the name of agent and concluding with pens, brochures, mortgage calculators or key tags. Each and every realtor needs a pen as well as a wisely designed brochure that includes a list of prices as well as his past sales. You could even advertise services that help agents produce an appealing resume or portfolio.

weight loss,diet,health,wellness,medical,yoga,cancer,AIDS ...

Health researchers say menopausal women who exercise may experience fewer hot flashes in the 24 hours following physical activity.

In general, women who are relatively inactive or are overweight or obese tend to have a risk of increased symptoms of perceived hot flashes, noted Steriani Elavsky, assistant professor of kinesiology at Penn State.

Perceived hot flashes do not always correspond to actual hot flashes. Most previous research analyzed only self-reported hot flashes. This is the first study known to the researchers to look at objective versus subjective hot flashes.

Elavsky and colleagues studied 92 menopausal women for 15 days. The women recruited for this study were different from many earlier menopause studies, said Elavsky.

In the past, women in menopause studies were experiencing severe symptoms and seeking help. They were probably not representative of the general population.

"Our sample included women with mild to moderate symptoms and they were recruited for a study of physical activity, not for a study of menopause," said Elavsky.

"We recruited women residing in the community. We used recruitment sources that included a variety of outlets in the community frequented by women, like libraries, fairs, gyms, advertisements in local newspapers, etc," she noted.

The women were 40 to 59 years old, with an average of two children and were not on hormone therapy. During analysis the researchers separated the women into normal weight and overweight/obese categories and higher fit and lower fit categories. These categories were not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The participants wore accelerometers to monitor their physical activity and also wore monitors that measured skin conductance, which varies with the moisture level of the skin. Each participant recorded the individual hot flashes she had throughout the 15-day period on a personal digital assistant.

Through these two methods of recording hot flashes, the researchers found the frequency of objective and subjective hot flashes. Objective hot flashes occurred when the monitor recorded them; subjective hot flashes occurred when the woman reported them. When an objective and a subjective hot flash were recorded within five minutes of each other, it was considered a "true positive" hot flash, the researchers said.

"Some physiological explanations would suggest that performing physical activity could increase hot flashes because it acutely increases body core temperature," said Elavsky.

To the contrary, the researchers found that this premise was not true, as on average the women in the study experienced fewer hot flash symptoms after exercising. However, the women who were classified as overweight, having a lower level of fitness or were experiencing more frequent or more intense hot flashes, noticed the smallest reduction in symptoms.

It is not yet known if a woman could use diet and exercise to lose weight and become more fit and therefore experience fewer hot flashes, but it is a possibility worthy of future investigation, noted the researchers.

"For women with mild to moderate hot flashes, there is no reason to avoid physical activity for the fear of making symptoms worse. In fact, physical activity may be helpful, and is certainly the best way to maximize health as women age. Becoming and staying active on a regular basis as part of your lifestyle is the best way to ensure healthy aging and well being, regardless of whether you experience hot flashes or not. ," said Elavsky.

The findings were reported in the current issue of Menopause.

Romney calls for unity after 'evil' acts

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says Friday is a time to grieve and remember the lives lost in the Colorado shootings.

He told supporters at a previously scheduled campaign stop in New Hampshire that justice will come another day for the person responsible. He called for Americans to focus on loving each other and those affected by what he said were "a few moments of evil" near Denver.

Romney is suspending political activity for the day. He has taken down campaign ads running in Colorado, postponed several media interviews and canceled a campaign trip his wife, Ann, was scheduled to make to Michigan.

Speaking in Florida earlier Friday, President Barack Obama called for reflection and said there would be other days for politics.

A Fabulously-Perfect, Summer Stay-cation for our Family ...

Most of you know that I recently returned from ten days on a mission trip, in New Orleans. ?Prior to making that trip, however, I had the most delightful ?stay-cation? experience, right here in Nebraska! ?My family and I had a great weekend and a fabulous stay at the Lincoln, NE Embassy Suites. ?This wonderful hotel quickly moved to the TOP of our list of favorites and will be the one we think of whenever we are looking for a high-value, affordable family-vacation stay.

(I need to also mention that I was sick with grief that I lost dozens of photos of this trip, when our phone carrier ?lost? them in moving them from my phone to our account. ?Happily, our ten-year-old had her camera along with her, so many shots were recovered from her unique perspective and I?m so grateful to have them.)

marquee

There is no doubt that we were expected, and received VIP treatment at the Lincoln Embassy Suites, however; after only a brief time at the hotel, it was also obvious that everyone staying there was given amenities and attention we have not experienced with any other hotel chain. ?We pulled up to the front of the hotel and were treated to valet parking. ?We walked through the doors into a modern and beautifully decorated lobby and THEN ? we turned to our left, and the entire room opened up into a gorgeous atrium, (nine stories high), filled with trees, plants, streams and waterfalls and sprinkled with dining tables and chairs! ?In the center of the atrium, we could look straight up to the giant sky-light that flooded the entire area with natural light. ?The atrium was surrounded, on three sides, by balconies in front of the picture windows of the guest rooms, rising all the way to the top floor. ?It was really quite beautiful, and yet, we immediately felt welcome and ?at-home?. ?The space was as comfortable and inviting as it was ?beautiful. ? Hotel staff remembered, (and called us by), our names, each time we passed; always checking to make sure ?that we wanted for nothing, throughout our stay.

suites

The beautiful atrium area. At the top of the picture you can see there is a small bar and grill where guests can order and then enjoy their drinks or food in the atrium. Just to the right of that, there is a full, sit-down restaurant with an extensive menu available. Whenever we would step out of our suite and look down, this was our view over the balcony. So pretty!

After we breezed through the simple registration process, at the front desk, we stepped into one of three glass elevators that overlooked the atrium and enjoyed the wonderful view as we were lifted up to the eighth floor and our spacious and comfy two-room suite. ?The suite had a HUGE bathroom, a bedroom with two full-sized beds, a desk, large closet and flat screen tv. ?The living area also had a flat screen tv and all the hook-ups to have?accommodated?our son?s gaming systems, though we didn?t think to bring them. ?Wi-fi was included with our room, as well, and was the perfect companion to the large dining/table desk area that made it easy to get work done or sit down to enjoy a snack with the kids. ?The kitchenette area had a sink and ample counter space with a coffee maker, mini-fridge and microwave, plus a safe for any valuables we needed to leave in the room. ?What a treat to open the fridge and find that it had been stocked for us with milk, chocolate milk and many varieties of soda, as well as a gorgeous tray of snacks that included fresh strawberries and cream cheese dip, apple slices, brownies, cookies and more! ?There was a note on the counter inviting us to enjoy these complimentary refreshments and my crew didn?t take long accepting that invitation. ?Delicious!

A well-laid out "kitchen" area gave us the opportunity to store and enjoy refreshments in our room.

Each suite has a separate living area with a flat screen TV. Ours also had a table/desk, a pullout sofa and an arm chair with an ottoman.

The accommodations were spacious and comfortable. While not dissimilar to many other "suites" we have stayed in, the Embassy Suites rooms were clean, well cared for and included amenities we did NOT have at any other "suites" chain. We loved our stay here!

After getting unpacked and freshening up, my ten-year-old and I decided to walk around and take a little tour, before the family went down for the free Manager?s Reception. ?And since it was one of her most favorite things, our tour HAD to include another ride in the glass elevators! ?We noted that there were not only ice and soda machines on each floor, but that using our key card access, we were able to open large, well-kept laundry facilities, as well. ?We scoped out the location of the pool and hot tub, for later, and discovered a weight and exercise room, plus a nice gift shop. ?There is even a full restaurant, inside the hotel! ?We took some extra time to stroll through the atrium, cross the footbridge over the stream and just enjoy the pretty space and the soothing sounds of the water tumbling over rocks in the falls.

At the Manager?s Reception we enjoyed chips and salsa, pretzels and other finger food snacks along with free beverages ? sodas, and if wanted, mixed drinks for the adults. ? The setting for the reception was the atrium we had toured, earlier, and there was ample room for all the guests as it is dotted with dozens of dining tables and chairs, plus conversation areas and other seating. ?It was a casual and comfortable gathering where guests had the opportunity to relax and visit.

We walked to the Haymarket, a local historic area of the city, full of restaurants, antique shops and art galleries, for dinner. ?It was great that it is so close to the hotel and we didn?t even have a need for the car. ?There is actually quite a lot to do in downtown Lincoln, that is within walking distance of Embassy Suites. ?We could have taken in a movie at the Grand Theatre across the street or checked out the latest concert or play at the Lied Center. ?And it would be impossible to go hungry with the number of available restaurants, serving everything from smokehouse barbecue, to pizza to Indian cuisine. ?The possibilities will?tantalize?your?taste buds?as you walk the Haymarket and smell all the delicious aromas.

walking to dinner

Walking to dinner in the Haymarket. There was so much that was in walking distance of the hotel!

After dinner, we walked back to the hotel and were surprised to find we had the gorgeous pool, sauna and spa area all to ourselves. ?It was such a fun evening and once, again, the staff at the hotel was cordial and attentive, acknowledging us by name and then later on, quickly responding to a request for fresh towels in the pool area. ?We finished off our fun at the pool and headed back upstairs to our suite, where the kids pulled out the hide-a-bed and curled up to enjoy a movie, while David and I were able to watch a movie of our own, in the other room. ?Two TV?s turned out to be a great feature!

pool

We enjoyed getting to swim in the gorgeous pool area during our stay!

The next morning, (You know, the point that is usually a mad scramble to choke down a couple granola bars or a tub of yogurt, pack and be out before check-out time.), we were able to wake up, get ready for our day and then head back downstairs to the beautiful atrium at the center of the hotel. ?Two professional chefs were busy taking personal orders for custom omelets, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes and other delicious fare at absolutely NO EXTRA COST ? totally FREE ? included in the price of the room for our entire family! ?There was also a generously stocked buffet line with cereals, fruit, donuts, muffins, bagels, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy and more ? also free. ?We were so shocked and pleased at the wonder of it all, I forgot to take any pictures of the extraordinarily delicious food! ?I enjoyed a delicious sausage and cheese omelet with green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese. ?The person behind me in line, ordered an egg white omelet with peppers and cheese. ?My daughter ordered a ham and cheese omelet with a side of bacon. ?My husband ordered?.well, you get the idea. ?There must have been eight or ten individual omelet skillets going at all times. ?We placed our orders for our customized breakfast and watched as the pro chefs prepared each one individually and perfectly! ?Yum! ?What an extraordinarily delicious breakfast experience! ?If we had gone to a restaurant to order this meal, we would easily have spent $50 or more for our family to have food that probably would not have approached the quality we received at Embassy Suites. ?Can you believe that was all included in the price of our already very reasonably priced suite? ?Amazing value!

made-to-order breakfast

The made-to-order custom breakfasts were scrumptious and the entire breakfast "spread" was plentiful and had so many options! just to the right of this area, was where the two professional chefs could be found, creating breakfast masterpieces for each guest!

?

After breakfast, we checked out and the valets brought our van right to the front door, where we loaded up to continue the rest of our brief stay-cation. ?We live so close to Lincoln and had taken our older daughters to visit some of the great frugal, family fun spots, but our ten-year-old hadn?t experienced several of those, yet. ?So, we strolled through the Sunken Gardens (completely free), visited the giant sculpture fountain in the zoo park, checked out a few interesting shops at the mall and then took her to tour the State Capitol building. ?It was a fun, educational and budget-friendly family weekend that created some great memories and we?re so grateful to Embassy Suites for making it special!

The House voted Wednesday night to continue spending millions for the?military?to back?sports?to attract recruits for the all-volunteer force. On a vote of 216-202, the House rejected an amendment by Reps. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., and Betty McCollum, D-Minn., that would have trimmed $72.3 million for?sports?sponsorships from a $608 billion defense bill for fiscal 2013.

The measure had targeted the money the National Guard spends to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR's most popular driver, as well as IndyCar Series driver JR Hildebrand. It also would have cut money the Army spends on the National Hot Rod Association drag racing, funds the Marine Corps uses for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and money spent on bass fishing.

Kingston and McCollum had challenged their colleagues' resolve to cut federal spending as the nation grapples with the trillion-plus deficit. House Republicans, their majority larger thanks to the 2010 class of tea party freshmen, have insisted on fiscal discipline and backed deep budget cuts in numerous domestic programs.

The House also rejected an effort by McCollum to reduce the budget for the?military's?140 bands and 5,000 full-time musicians from $388 million to $200 million. The congresswoman had questioned the need to spend nearly $4 billion over the next decade on?military?bands and musical performances.

The House spent most of the day and night debating the far-reaching defense legislation that provides money for war, troops and weapons next year. Yet talk of Earnhardt's No. 88, bass fishing and NASCAR dominated the discussion.

Kingston, a Georgian who says he hails from NASCAR and?military?country, insisted that the sponsorship money was ineffective, attracting few recruits, and made no sense as the Army shrinks from a peak of 570,000 to 490,000 and the Marine Corps drops by 20,000, to 182,000. The end of the Iraq war, the drawdown in Afghanistan and the nation's fiscal woes have reshaped the defense budget, which has nearly doubled in the last 10 years.

"If someone is going to sign away five or six years of their life, it's going to take more than an ad on an automobile," Kingston told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference prior to the floor debate.

He said the money should be spent on hiring more recruiters, not?military?sponsorships.

"We're in a fiscal crisis here," said Minnesota's McCollum. "Bass fishing is not national security."

But the two faced strong opposition from members of North Carolina's congressional delegation as well as lawmakers from Mississippi and Florida.

North Carolina is home to Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the base for most NASCAR teams. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is located in Charlotte adjacent to one of NASCAR's main offices. Its headquarters are in Daytona Beach, Fla.

600-year-old linen bras found in Austrian castle

In this undated picture publicly provided by the Archeological Institute of the University of Innsbruck, medieval bra is photograhed. The bra is commonly thought to be little more than 100 years old as corseted women abandoned rigid fashions and opted for the more natural look. But that timeline is about to be revised with the discovery of four brassieres from the Middle Ages in a debris-filled vault of an Austrian castle. The find, formally announced Wednesday July 18, 2012 by the University of Innsbruck, is being described by historical fashion experts as revolutionary because it indicates that the bra was already worn around 600 years ago before being abandoned for the stiff stays dictated by the form-hugging clothing that become the mode for centuries. (AP) ? A revolutionary discovery is rewriting the history of underwear: Some 600 years ago, women wore bras.

The University of Innsbruck said Wednesday that archeologists found four linen bras dating from the Middle Ages in an Austrian castle. Fashion experts describe the find as surprising because the bra had commonly been thought to be only little more than 100 years old as women abandoned the tight corset.

Instead, it appears the bra came first, followed by the corset, followed by the reinvented bra.

One specimen in particular "looks exactly like a (modern) brassiere," says Hilary Davidson, fashion curator for the London Museum. "These are amazing finds."

Although the linen garments were unearthed in 2008, they did not make news until now says Beatrix Nutz, the archaeologist responsible for the discovery.

Researching the items and carbon dating them to make sure they were genuine took some time. She delivered a lecture on them last year but the information stayed within academic circles until a recent article in the BBC History Magazine.

"We didn't believe it ourselves," she said in a telephone call from the Tyrolean city of Innsbruck. "From what we knew, there was no such thing as bra-like garments in the 15th century."

The university said the four bras were among more than 2,700 textile fragments ? some linen, others linen combined with cotton ? that were found intermixed with dirt, wood, straw and pieces of leather.

"Four linen textiles resemble modern-time bras" with distinct cups and one in particular looks like today's version, it said, with "two broad shoulder straps and a possible back strap, not preserved but indicated by partially torn edges of the cups onto which it was attached."

And the lingerie was not only functional.

The bras were intricately decorated with lace and other ornamentation, the statement said, suggesting they were also meant to please a suitor.

While paintings of the era show outerwear, they do not reveal what women wore beneath. Davidson, the fashion curator, described the finds as "kind of a missing link" in the history of women's underwear.

Women started experimenting with bra-like garments in the late 1800s and the first modern brassiere was patented in the early 19th century. It is thought to have been invented by New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob, who was unhappy with the look of her gown over a stiff corset.

Also found at Lemberg Castle in Tyrol was a linen undergarment that looks very much like a pair of panties. But Nutz said it is men's underwear ? women did not wear anything under their flowing skirts back then.

"Underpants were considered a symbol of male dominance and power," she said.

Medieval drawings often show a man and a woman fighting for a pair of underpants in a symbolic battle to see who "wears the trousers" in the family.

Sony Xperia Neo L gets priced at Rs. 18,499

Sony had announced the Xperia Neo L a couple of months back and now the good news is that this device is soon coming to Indian shores. This upcoming new smartphone from their Xperia lineup has got a price tag of Rs. 18,499 on online store seller Flipkart. This Ice Cream Sandwich running smartphone was announced in two colours ? glossy black and glossy white, but the site listing shows only black on preorder for now. The estimated release date for the phone is the 4th week of July, which means we could see the phone by early next week. The Neo L has a 4-inch display with a 1GHz Qualcomm processor and 512 MB of RAM. It also looks quite similar to their popular Xperia Neo V, but this is the first smartphone that comes with ICS onboard.?

?

The Xperia Neo L

?

?

Here?s a look at the specifications of the Sony Xperia Neo L:

? 4.0-inch TFT touchscreen with a 480 x 854 pixel resolution

? 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, 512 MB of RAM

? Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich?

? 1GB internal storage

? 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi

? GPS with A-GPS support

? Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, USB 2.0

? 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 720p video recording

? Secondary VGA camera

? Stereo FM radio with RDS

? Memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card

? 3.5 mm handsfree socket

? 1500 mAh Lithium - ion battery?

?

The design doesn?t look anywhere close to the new Xperia S, P and U that Sony has announced in the recent past. However, it does have a form factor that reminds you of the older generation Xperias. The Neo L doesn?t win any awards on the slimness front as it is 12.2mm in thickness as compared to the others that range around 9.2mm. In terms of features, the Neo L will have gesture control as well. As we saw with the Sola, that?s not particularly a big feature to boast of though. Earlier, there were reports that this smartphone would be available only in China, but it?s good that India is on the list as well.?

?

It is worth mentioning that the Xperia Sola is a grand more expensive than the Neo L and comes with a dual core processor but without a front camera. The cheaper Xperia U has a dual core processor as well, but the real world performance of both these smartphones left a lot to be desired, as we saw in our review. Let?s hope the Xperia Neo L has something different to offer. Would you buy the Neo L at this price point? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

House weighs military sports sponsorships

Congress is waving a warning flag over the military spending millions of dollars to sponsor NASCAR cars and other sports to attract recruits.

Challenging lawmakers' resolve to cut federal spending, Republican Rep. Jack Kingston and Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum pleaded with their colleagues Wednesday to back a measure that would trim $72.3 million from a $608 billion defense spending bill. The amendment would target money that the National Guard spends to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr. in NASCAR, the Marine Corps spends on Ultimate Fighting Championship and other military sponsorships from fishing to hot rod racing.

The House debated the far-reaching defense legislation that provides money for war, troops and weapons next year. Yet talk of Earnhardt's No. 88, bass fishing and NASCAR dominated the discussion in what shaped up as a fierce fight.

A vote was scheduled for Wednesday evening on the military sponsorships.

Kingston, a Georgian who says he hails from NASCAR and military country, insisted that the sponsorship money was ineffective, attracting few recruits, and made no sense as the Army shrinks from a peak of 570,000 to 490,000 and the Marine Corps drops by 20,000, to 182,000.

He said the money should be spent on hiring more recruiters not military sponsorships.

"We're in a fiscal crisis here," McCollum said. "Bass fishing is not national security."

But the two faced strong opposition from members of North Carolina's congressional delegation as well as lawmakers from Mississippi and Florida. North Carolina is home to the speedway in Rockingham and the Richard Petty Museum.

Republican Rep. Sue Myrick dismissed the amendment as micromanaging the military's recruiting for the all-volunteer force. Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell said the relationship between the military and NASCAR was important.

Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., said there was "no reason Congress should be telling the Department of Defense where and how to spend money." In fact, Congress repeatedly instructs the Pentagon on how to spend the money it appropriates.

Various sports leagues weighed in this week, sending a letter to Republican and Democratic leaders urging them to oppose the amendment.

"Sports marketing has long been an important element in the U.S. Armed Forces' efforts to reach young adults and active duty personnel regarding the military's missions and objectives that serve our country," said the letter to House Republican and Democratic leaders from NASCAR, IZOD IndyCar series, Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association.

"The benefits from these types of sponsorships offset the minimal costs to taxpayers," the letter said.

In recent days, the Army ended its sponsorship with Stewart-Haas Racing, with the service saying the money was not a great investment.

SPIN METER: 'Middle class' turns fuzzy in politics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a recent speech, President Barack Obama referred to the "middle class" 14 times, defining it as a family that makes up to $250,000 a year. Republican challenger Mitt Romney has looked at it from the other direction, saying that someone who falls into poverty "is still middle class."

In the fuzzy labels and loose speech of this political season, "middle class" has ballooned to cover just about everyone. So what does the term really mean?

There's no official definition.

If anything, a slew of economic data suggests a middle class that's actually shrinking. Mid-wage manufacturing and other jobs are disappearing due to automation and outsourcing, while lower-income positions and poverty spike higher. The White House's chief economist, Alan Krueger, said in January that the middle class fell from 50 percent of U.S. households in 1970 to 42 percent in 2010, as more families moved to the extreme ends of income distribution.

But it's not just about economic ranges. And politicians are not bound by such gauges anyway.

"Politicians love to use the term, because it's vague and connotes an image of regular American people." said Dennis Gilbert, a sociology professor at Hamilton College and author of "The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality." He said, the varying uses of "middle class" on the campaign trail are "dishonest, and it's absurd."

In recent months, the phrase has been popping up with increased frequency. Referring to the election as a "make-or-break" moment for the middle class, Obama used the term repeatedly in his July 9 speech calling for an extension of "middle-class" tax breaks for families making less than $250,000, or $200,000 for individuals ? basically everyone but the top 2 percent. He mentioned the phrase seven times at a fundraiser Tuesday in San Antonio.

Romney has suggested that the upper bounds of the middle class include families earning $200,000. He's pushing an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for everyone, including the wealthiest 2 percent. Romney's campaign seeks to highlight a weak economy that he says is a "kick in the gut to the middle class," with a new video this week attacking what he calls an Obama record of "political payoffs and middle-class layoffs."

Just Wednesday, Republican House Speaker John Boehner stepped into the fray with a comment that Obama "doesn't give a damn about middle-class Americans who are out there looking for work."

Responded Obama spokesman Jay Carney: The middle class is the "principal preoccupation" of Obama's presidency.

The meaning of "middle class" has grown even harder to parse following a populist Occupy movement that for months protested high unemployment and income inequality with a rallying cry of "We are the 99 percent."

Formal definitions vary, but few academics would say it covers more than 60 percent of Americans.

When it comes to earnings, the Census Bureau divides household income into quintiles, or groups of 20 percent. Some economists narrowly define the middle class as those in the middle 20 percent of the distribution, earning between $38,000 and $61,000. Others define it more broadly to include the middle 60 percent of the income distribution, between $20,000 and $100,000.

Defining who is poor, by contrast, is officially more absolute. The federal poverty line is based on the minimum income needed to have what the government considers a basic standard of living. Two times the poverty line is often a cutoff for "low-income" families who may be eligible for government aid. The poverty line currently is $22,314 for a family of four, meaning that a family making $44,000 could be both "low income" and "middle class."

Yet another way to gauge class is what income tax bracket you're in. The IRS has six of them. This year, the bottom bracket sets a tax rate of 10 percent for taxable income up to $17,400 for couples. The top bracket is 35 percent, applied to taxable income above $388,350. The middle class is commonly seen as falling in the 15 and 25 percent brackets, or couples whose taxable income is between $17,400 and $142,700. But some define it all the way up to the second-highest bracket, which is 33 percent and includes taxable income up to $388,350.

Sociologists take a broader view and focus not on income, but occupation: an "upper middle class" of white-collar specialists (lawyers, engineers, professors, economists and architects); and a "middle class" of lower-level white-collar workers (teachers, nurses, insurance sales and real estate agents). Together, these groups make up about 45 percent of households and sit near the upper end of the income distribution, just behind the top 1 percent.

The meanings shift more dramatically when measured by self-identification and quality of life.

Few Americans label themselves as upper class or lower class, which are seen as either pretentious or demeaning. Roughly 95 percent of adults say they are middle class (50 percent), upper middle class (13 percent) or working class (32 percent), according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted in May. Just 2 percent describe themselves as "better off" than upper middle class.

A separate ABC News poll found that being "middle class" often meant more to people than specific income levels, which can be affected by family size, expenses and local costs of living. At least two-thirds of adults said being middle class meant owning a home, being able to save for the future and afford things like vacation travel, the occasional new car and various other little luxuries, according to the 2010 poll.

The slippery definitions have created incongruous political moments.

In his January speech describing a shrinking middle class, Krueger, who is chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, offered a precise definition that has yet to be applied on the campaign trail: households with annual incomes within 50 percent of the national median income. The current median income is $49,445, putting middle-class earnings in a range from $25,000 to $75,000.

Democrats from higher cost-of-living areas, such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, have sought to push the "middle class" definition higher, arguing that families earning up to $250,000 in big cities such as New York and San Francisco are more likely to be dual-income worker bees than a wealthy elite. They initially pushed for extending tax cuts for those with incomes under $1 million, but are now backing Obama's proposal, which would yield an additional $366 billion in tax revenue over the next decade.

Romney, who sometimes battles perceptions that his vast wealth makes him out of touch, stirred derisive comments when he told MSNBC in January that he wasn't focusing so much on the needs of the poor. He explained that "somebody who's fallen from the middle class to poverty, in my opinion, is still middle class." Liberal bloggers were quick to ridicule the idea of "middle-class poverty."

"'Middle class' in politics is not a numerical value," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "When voters hear 'middle class,' they don't hear people who make above or below this amount of money, they hear 'us.' It's a way for politicians to signal to voters that 'I share your values.'"

It's hard to entirely fault politicians who mirror definitions of "middle class" that voters want to hear.

But Jamieson says the fuzzy meanings confuse public debate, whether it's about spending for government safety-net programs for the poor, balancing the federal budget by taxing a wider range of income earners or creating jobs for an American middle class with varying degrees of education and skill levels. "That kind of slipperiness creates a disconnect between campaigning and governance," she said.

Small Businesses Can Succeed in International Markets ? SMB ...

Q: My business is doing well and I?d like to expand, however I?m reluctant to add another brick-and-mortar location and additional employees.? What other opportunities exist for small business owners like me?

A: Where?s the next market opportunity for your small business? It may well be overseas. Two-thirds of the world?s purchasing power is outside the US, along with 96 percent of consumers. Doing business overseas can provide a measure of insulation against fluctuations in domestic markets and enhance your overall competitiveness.

Bill Cairns, president of international business development consultant BCM Group, says small businesses are well-suited to join the global marketplace. ?They are more flexible to adapt to market demands, and to different regional and cultural needs,? Cairns says, adding that close relationships are as important?and sometimes more so?in certain countries as in the US. ?A small business is better able to cultivate that kind of relationship than a large company.?

Thousands of U.S. small businesses are already exporting their products and services to other countries. Your business can too by thinking globally and doing proper research to make informed decisions.

A good first step is to take the free export readiness self-assessment at Export.gov. You?ll get a better idea your current level of preparation, and learn about counseling and training courses to help address specific needs.

Map out your exporting strategy much the way you developed your business plan. That means doing research on specific markets, consumer habits, existing competition, regulations legal issues (both in the U.S. and the areas you?re exploring), distribution channels, etc. Some good information sources include:

Local trade organizations and exhibitionsSBAU.S. consulatesU.S. industrial organizations that do international market research

To explore market- or product-specific opportunities, consider these sources:

U.S. Department of Commerce Advocacy Center ? helps U.S. companies in various industry sectors win government contracts across the globe.U.S. Trade and Development Agency ? provides the latest information on contracting opportunities with grant recipients in host countries.Trade Mission Online ? maintains a database of U.S. small businesses that can be searched by foreign firms and U.S. businesses seeking a domestic partner or supplier.EC21 ? a business-to-business marketplace that facilitates online trades between exporters and importers from all around the world.Global Sources ? creates, manages, and delivers information that international trading partners need to meet and do business.Tradeeasy ? an international trade enabler that incorporates both on- and off-line marketing solutions to sellers.

As you develop your international business strategy, Cairns cautions that the decision-making process in other countries differs from that in the U.S., and that developing overseas relationships requires a personal touch. ?You can?t do everything by email or telephone,? he says. ?Some kind of regular face-to-face contact is a must.? Samsung Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace 2 resurface, get proper launches in Singapore and Taiwan

Samsung has been quiet on the subject of its second-generation Galaxy Beam and the Galaxy Ace 2 ever since they showed together in Barcelona this February, but the two just reemerged as close buddies for an initial launch in East Asia. The Galaxy Beam receives the grandest introduction, as it's coming to Singapore on July 7th followed by a more nebulous mid-July release for Taiwan residents. Those craving tiny, dual-core TouchWiz will have no choice but to flock to Singapore and pick up an Ace 2 at the end of the month. There's no word on where else they'll go on their respective world tours, although the cash outlay is strictly in the middle of the pack: we're looking at S$648 or NT$16,900 ($513 or $566) off-contract for a Galaxy Beam, while its more diminutive cousin carries a S$438 ($352) price tag on similar terms.

Steve Kondik talks CyanogenMod at SF Android User Group

Android Central

The day before Google I/O kicked off, Steve "Cyanogen" Kondik of CyanogenMod fame visited the San Francisco Android User Group, were he gave a complete rundown of everything relating to the popular custom firmware. From its roots on the T-Mobile G1, right up to its current status as the leading custom ROM for Android, supported across dozens of devices.

The SF Android User Group's founding company Marakana has published a full video of the CM lead's hour-long presentation. There's a lot of detail, and it's definitely worth your time if you're the slightest bit interested in learning how the CM team takes the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code and transforms it into something that'll run on a slew of recent -- and not-so-recent -- Android phones and tablets.

What's arguably most interesting is the section on the challenges facing the CM team when a new version of Android drops, or when a manufacturer releases kernel source code, as well as the headaches posed by the proprietary code used in graphics drivers and camera firmware.

We've got the video embedded after the break, and we challenge you to watch it and not develop a newfound respect for the talented folks who bring custom ROMs to life.

Nash goes to Lakers in sign-and-trade deal

PHOENIX (AP) ? Steve Nash is going to the Los Angeles Lakers, a Pacific Division rival the two-time MVP point guard tried so hard to beat, with little success, in his eight seasons with the Phoenix Suns.

At Nash's request, the Lakers and Suns reached a sign-and-trade deal, with Los Angeles using the trade exception it got when it sent Lamar Odom to Dallas to facilitate the transaction.

The 38-year-old Nash, who spent the past eight seasons with the Suns, was a free agent but a sign-and-trade agreement was necessary for the Lakers to afford him. He agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract. In return, the Suns get four draft picks ? first rounders in 2013 and 2015 and second rounders in 2013 and 2014.

Nash's agent Bill Duffy said the deal was finalized Wednesday about 6 p.m., PDT.

In a statement released by the agent, Nash said that after he and the Suns agreed to part ways, he re-approached them to ask to pursue a sign-and-trade deal with Los Angeles "because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family," who live in Phoenix.

"They were very apprehensive and didn't want to do it," Nash said. "Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better."

There had been sign-and-trade talks with New York and a lucrative free agent offer from Toronto.

The deal will put Nash on the floor with the team he tried so hard to unseat as a Western Conference power, teaming him with Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and at least for now, Pau Gasol.

The Suns at least get something in the loss of their longtime leader and one of the city's most popular athletes, although no one to help immediately, unless some or all of the picks are used in future trades.

Nash's Phoenix teammate Jared Dudley tweeted that Nash "has not only been the best but the most unselfish player I ever played with. I only wish him the best. He deserves everything. Steve Nash has made many players millions. Only fitting to trade to a team that has a chance to win the ship and pay what he deserves."

Nash has never made it to the NBA Finals. He was last in the Western Conference finals against the Lakers in 2010, when the Suns lost in six games and Los Angeles went on to win the NBA title.

The sign-and-trade agreement first was reported by sports personality John Gambadoro of KTAR radio.

The Suns drafted Nash in 1998 but traded him to Dallas after two seasons because Phoenix already had Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd at the position. Nash played six seasons for Dallas but bolted when owner Mark Cuban declined to spend big money to keep him. Then-Suns owner Jerry Colangelo brought a plane load of team players and officials to Dallas to woo Nash.

Nash thrived in Mike D'Antoni's run-and-gun system, earning MVP honors in 2005, when he averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 assists, and again in 2006, when he averaged a career-high 18.8 points and 10.5 assists. Nash averaged fewer than 10 assists only once, 9.7 in 2008-09, and topped 11 per game five times in his eight years with Phoenix.

Despite his age and the fact his team failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row, Nash was second in the NBA in assists last season at 10.7 and averaged 12.7 points. His 53 percent shooting rate was a career high.

He is one of the most accurate free throw shooters in NBA history at 90.4 percent. His 9,916 assists rank him fifth in NBA history behind, in order, John Stockton, Kidd, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson.

The Suns resisted trading Nash during his final season and insisted they were interested in bringing him back, but they never seriously were in the discussion. Toronto and New York dominated the talk until the Lakers came on with a flash on Tuesday.

Nash's arrival should rejuvenate the Lakers, who lost in the second round for the second straight postseason after their back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. The Lakers struggled to move from departed coach Phil Jackson's triangle offense to new coach Mike Brown's system during the lockout-shortened season, with four-time All-Star forward Gasol particularly failing to fit in while getting pushed to the third option on offense most nights.

Nash's peerless playmaking abilities and veteran presence could smooth over those problems, particularly after a full training camp to define the Lakers' roles in Brown's offense.

Los Angeles hasn't had an elite point guard alongside Bryant for several seasons, failing to address Derek Fisher's gradual decline while the rest of the West got better. The Lakers got sub-par play last season from the 37-year-old Fisher, who was traded to Houston at the deadline.

The five-time NBA champion was replaced in the starting lineup by journeyman Ramon Sessions, who provided speed and scoring but struggled badly in his first career playoff run, nearly disappearing from the Lakers' lineup. Sessions' decision last month to decline his player option for next season means his career with the Lakers is finished unless he's interested in returning as a backup, an unlikely prospect.

The draft picks probably don't mean too much to the Lakers, who have traded away their first-round picks the past three seasons. They haven't drafted a regular starter since 2005.
